The Autism Digest story highlights how with the unwavering support of his parents, his determination and resources from Autism Speaks, Kadin was able to make the Dean’s list four times in a row. Lindsay Naeder, Vice President, Services and Supports, Community Impact at Autism Speaks was touched to learn about a Minnesota mom making sure parents have locks to prevent their autistic children from wandering, a behavior that nearly 50% of the families surveyed in our community have experienced. She shared with USA Today that when children wander, they are often drawn to bodies of water, which is why raising awareness around safety is a top priority for @Autism Speaks. From keeping autistic children out of the water by securing the home, to enrolling in swim lessons and making neighbors aware of what to do help prevent the risks of wandering, there are many ways that families, and even members of the community, can lend a hand to help keep our kids safe. Our very own Stuart Spielman, spoke with USA Today about how traveling with his autistic son Zak has brought their family together. They’ve learned to stay mindful of Zak’s needs, choosing activities, restaurants, and destinations that he, along with the entire family, will enjoy. “The joys of seeing someone you care about kicking sand on the beach, just being content being in a different place and being happy, it means something special. With Zak, he’s part of our family, sometimes it’s harder to travel, but it’s just so important.” https://lnkd.in/gd-UGi62
Most families with autistic children don't travel. Here's how this one did it.

Autism Speaks has spent years advocating to ban the use of electrical stimulation devices on individuals with disabilities, including autism. This week, we joined 39 other organizations in asking members of Congress to reject a legislative proposal that would create a loophole, allowing the Judge Rotenberg Center to continue using painful electric shocks for the alleged purposes of modifying harmful behavior in people with disabilities. We pledge to continue advocacy efforts to remove this provision and ensure people with autism are protected from the psychological and physical harm of ESD use. https://lnkd.in/gV5pHpxj
