Apex conducted comprehensive natural resource inventories for several military sites. These inventories included detailed assessments of various ecological and environmental factors critical to maintaining the sustainability of these areas. Here, Dr. Amy Smith is completing a macroinvertebrate study to assess water quality. This method of sampling macroinvertebrates gives a long-term perspective of stream health, unlike traditional water sampling, which only offers a short-term snapshot of water quality attained in water samples. #ApexCompanies #WaterQuality #NaturalResources Amy D. The Central Everglades Planning Project aims to enhance surface water flow in the Everglades National Park and Florida Bay. The project involves constructing a 78-billion-gallon (BG) reservoir and a 2.1-BG stormwater treatment area within the Everglades Agricultural Area. The construction includes a 17.3-mile reservoir foundation and a cutoff wall in Palm Beach County, Florida. The project requires significant surface and groundwater management due to the challenging karstic limestone environment and limited space for dewatering effluent storage. This necessitates additional planning for coverage under the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System and South Florida Water Management (SFWMD) permitting criteria. Apex, with its expertise in south Florida construction dewatering in karst environments, was retained as the construction dewatering expert. They developed a Surface-Subsurface Water Management Plan (SSWMP) and obtained a Master Dewatering Permit from the SFWMD. The SSWMP details how surface and groundwater will be managed throughout construction and will be updated as the project progresses. Offsite discharges conform to SFWMD permitting criteria, and a turbidity control and monitoring plan was established. Additionally, Apex developed a construction dewatering plan to monitor groundwater elevations in real time using a telemetry system by VanEssen, saving project budget attributed to operations and maintenance. #ApexCompanies #WaterScienceAssociates #CentralEvergladesPlanningProject #EvergladesAgriculturalArea Kirk Martin Mike Alfieri, P.G., P.Hg., CGWP Andrew Melamet Jacob Schaffer Saashen Sealy Rahul John

A long-term client engaged Apex to assist with a stormwater emergency response due to a sudden collapse onsite. The southern side of the employee entrance roadway faced a significant slope failure caused by an outfall pipe deteriorating approximately 20 feet below the roadway. This situation posed immediate safety risks for vehicular traffic, as the roadway serves as the primary access route for all employees. The project was addressed in four phases. In Phase 1, temporary best management practices were used to control water runoff and prevent further erosion. Phase 2 involved sliplining the pipe as a temporary solution while we conducted further investigations of the surrounding soils. An engineered plan for permanent repairs was issued. Phase 3 initiated permanent repairs, which included boring a new 60” RCP pipe under the roadway parallel to the existing outfall pipe and abandoning the old pipe. Finally, in Phase 4, soil enhancements were implemented via compaction grouting to the roadway within 100 linear feet of the abandoned and new outfall pipes. This comprehensive project addressed slope failure, outfall pipe deterioration, and safety concerns, ensuring the continued functionality of the employee entrance roadway. #ApexCompanies #Stormwater #Texas Abby Stanley Edward Coleman
