Balancing vulnerability and professionalism in speeches requires a nuanced approach. Vulnerability can humanize the speaker and make the message relatable, fostering empathy and connection with the audience. It involves sharing personal stories or emotions authentically. However, it's crucial to maintain professionalism by ensuring the vulnerability serves a purpose and aligns with the speech's overall message and objectives. This balance is achieved by framing vulnerable moments within a context that supports the speech's themes, maintaining composure, and demonstrating expertise throughout the delivery. Integrating vulnerability tactfully can enhance authenticity and resonate with the audience while upholding the speaker's credibility.

Often, vulnerability is seen as unprofessional, but nothing could be further from the truth. When I work with leaders and influencers looking to have greater impact, I often share the importance of humanizing business and entrepreneurship and creating authentic connections. True authenticity emerges when the heart of the people behind the businesses comes to life- and this can only happen with vulnerability. Rather than focusing on limiting vulnerability—which we tend to do anyway—we should emphasize humanizing the business world. This approach makes interactions more genuine and less robotic, fostering deeper connections and trust. Authenticity and vulnerability are not weaknesses but strengths that build stronger, more relatable brands.

Any vulnerability that you are facing, that’s an indicator that it needs attention and a plan to circumvent. There is a self- reflection that is required on your part, there are questions that you need to ask and find answers and follow three As 1) Alter- a situation if you can 2) Adapt -to the changing winds 3) Accept- if nothing can be done . By doing this you can always strike balance between your vulnerability and professionalism.

Honesty is the best policy in speeches and in life. An audience will always connect more with a speaker who seems honest and relatable. Conversely, it is easy to see through a face when presented with one. Use experiences when able as a sense of strength to show expertise, and experience in a situation when speaking to an audience.

Over sharing can be detrimental to your underlying goal of the presentation. Your welcome address should be an overview of the subject matter and you purpose for speaking. All personal sharing should pertain to your topic. If an open question section is included in your presentation, allow questions that are relating to your subject matter, if it does not relate you can choose to deflect, or you can address a particular sensitive question privately with a simple one on one discussion after the presentation.

This is important to do, as many will often feel challenged by a dilemma as a treat to their opinions. Ask the audience to keep in mind that they should not be enslaved to a only a single vantage, instead they should try to master & conquer all perspectives to see the true strength in every system of belief. Also remind the audience that there are additional forums that may continue via direct email with the keynote speaker; so long as we focus on the message and never the messenger. You may find there are boundaries that are specific to the rhetorical content you are speaking to. Prepare a list of discussion agreements to be consented to for all in attendance. Be prepared to intervene any time an agreement is violated with a redirection.

Give proper & sincere validation to both opposing vantage points. Truly great opportunity can arise from either circumstance; this is an excellent chance to engage all listeners on a primal level! How do we defeat fear? Recognize the fallacy of a false dilemma. As if there were only two actions: fight or flight. We see it is a logical fallacy because it does not allow for more than just 2 actions. Why not both, or neither for that matter? Example: you are asked if you want cake or ice cream. Given only two choices you can decline, ask for an alternative dessert, or even have a bit of both! This often is an olive branch to all in a tense crowd with diverse opinions. Deliver with confidence and remind all to show respect for differences.

I feel this point is significantly dependent on what, or why, you are presenting, as well as whether you are "selling" an emotion, a transformation, a business transaction, or a simple solution to a problem in your presentation. If your goal is to draw on the emotions of your audience for say, support of a cause rather than to facilitate a financial transaction, then I believe lowering the barrier of "professionalism" is appropriate. Lowering the mask of professionalism can create a tangible connection between the speaker and the audience, facilitating a far higher emotional buy-in.

Demonstrating knowledge of your subject is an asset, but being able to breakdown your subject matter into common terminology makes it relatable to your audience. It will also enhance your professionalism by demonstrating you are fully versed in your subject matter. Once you have established your professionalism you can then relax into your subject using comfortable terminology. So when opening and reviewing your subject matter feel free to utilize the “Big Words”, then as you progress into your subject matter relax into comfortable language. Typically this will relax your audience, and also relax you.

Personally, I have a Google Drive of every talk I prepare. The day after the talk I set aside a few minutes to reflect on how the talk went: - what fell flat - what concepts were sloppy, what went well - was there anything that I added that my audience enjoyed I put all of my reflection notes in red on the top of the page. If I recorded my talk I will put the YouTube link in there, too. Finally, I give the talk a heading using baseball lingo: Single, Double, Triple, Homerun. That way, when I need a talk for another gig I can go to my Drive and type in "Homerun"... all of my best talks are filtered to the top with notes on how to do better. **Recently, a mentor gave me this advice and I only recently started applying this system.

For those that are just starting out in public speaking, I would advise recording yourself presenting, prior to the engagement. This will allow for instant feedback and discovering where your possible weakness lies. When I was teaching students on speaking in public, some were extremely uncomfortable, so instead of having them face their classmates and myself, I suggested they turn their back to the group and present. This technique actually help them with their nervousness. A majority of the time they ended up turning around and facing their audience and in turn facing their fear. Preparing and rehearsing will improve your comfort and enhance your performance.

Perfect gets a target on your back, mistakes make you real and your message will be received by more of your audience. Be genuine, if you nail it stand proud, public speaking is more feared than death in most surveys…your special just for willingness to share with the world. Be prepared to disarm a hostile audience by offering a simple analogy. Often times the false dilemma arises mainly due to the refusal to recognize a greater plurality of options. All dilemmas involve only two options that are in a state of juxtaposition (eg. fight or flight). Defeating this simply involves adding an extra option. This could be both fight & flight, neither fight nor flight, or any other option besides the initial two. Those that with a rigid tendency toward concrete operations that do not see this as a sound & valid response should be shown equal respect, even if it is not reciprocated. Just remember to set the framework that a true dilemma is a near-to impossible scenario.
