Resist the urge to spend a lot of money getting started speaking. I've seen speakers pay for expensive marketing, video and pay to play speaking events and not land any paying gigs right away. I suggest keeping your costs low. Create your speaker one sheet in Canva. Instead of paying thousands of dollars to put yourself on stage at a pay to play event, rent a local low cost or free event space, invite an audience of family and friends to attend, source an aspiring videographer, bring a change of clothes and record 2-3 talks. Get those compiled into a speakers reel and take the long form video footage, cut it to short form content using free AI tools, and post on social media. Use all of this as marketing collateral to pitch yourself.

Speakers can also create and license the use of their workshops, conferences to organizations. Speakers may also take the high level overview from a talk and break it down into paid challenges/subscriptions/memberships, how to courses, and other digital assets to sell.

Having multiple sources of income is great. However, if those pipelines are empty, then they mean absolutely nothing. Find one or two sources of income that you have the ability to quickly and easily create a pipeline that will lead to business. I have seen people get into this industry and then do the same thing to get business for two years, and still, they have nothing. Make sure that whatever you try generates income.

Pricing depends on several factors: money mindset, mode of delivery, length of talk, type of talk, location of talk (local or travel), audience size and experience level. First, know that speaking is a service and you should be paid for it. If you have fear around asking to be paid, work on your money mindset while working on improving your speaking skillset. Next, limit the number of free talks you will do. I have seen speakers that have been speaking infrequently for years and have yet to be paid. Set that number (low) and stick to it. Network and/or join professional speaking organizations to assist in researching market rates for speaking. Start on the lower end of the comp range and as you get more experience raise your asking price.

Be flexible without discounting your worth. I don't like giving discounts, but I find other ways of adding more value to the event. For example, I like to match my speaking fee with the same value in print copies of my book. Now, the organiser has something for the goody bags, and you get more exposure.
