I love this exercise of interviewing. I love to get to know real people (customers or any other situation). As pre-sales & sales I did it some many times... so let me give you one of my secrets. When it comes to gathering needs & problems while interviewing a customer, one word comes to my mind: the maieutics or the art to questionning. 1- favour open questions 2- do not stick on a pre-defined list of questions 3- listen carefully and be interested 4- rephrase and ask if your understanding correct 5- take notes and write down exactly what has been said by the customer, in his words
