CG studio WildBrain, the company behind the Netflix shows Sonic Prime, Ninjago: Dragons Rising, and Carmen San Diego, is producing the Minecraft animated series for Netflix.
As for the Minecraft movie, it stars Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Kate McKinnon, Danielle Brooks, Jennifer Coolidge, Jemaine Clement, Emma Myers, and Sebastian Eugene Hansen. It's set for release in 2025, but there is no word yet on when the Netflix TV show might come out.
The Minecraft series celebrates its 15th anniversary this year, following its original release in 2009. The game has been an enormous success, tallying more than 300 million copies sold over its lifetime. That makes it the No. 2 best-selling video game of all time, trailing only Tetris.
Minecraft is an open-ended sandbox game that is not known for its narrative. In fact, part of the appeal of the series is that players can do anything they want. There have already been attempts to tell stories in the Minecraft world, as Mojang teamed up with Telltale for an episodic game series called Minecraft: Story Mode, featuring the voices of Patton Oswal and Ashley Johnson. It was later added to Netflix and then removed.
