Namco Bandai has unveiled 3D fighting game Soulcalibur V, due out on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2012.
Producer Hisaharu Tago told an audience at the Japanese publisher's LevelUp event, attended by Christian Donlan for Eurogamer, that the game is the "true sequel" in the popular weapon-based fighting game series.
It takes place 17 years after Soul Calibur IV. Tago told fans to expect returning characters and new ones.
The main character is described as a "young man" named Patroklos, the child of Sophitia and Rothion.
Various elements of the battle system have been improved and new features have been added to make the battles more exciting, he said.
Namco Bandai will announce more information at the E3 trade show in June.
The last game in the main Soul Calibur series was 2008 PS3 and Xbox 360 title Soul Calibur IV, but a PlayStation Portable spin-off, Broken Destiny, launched in 2009.
