Resident Evil 5 will be released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, according to an exclusive feature in the latest edition of Japanese gaming mag Famitsu.

Translations of the article reveal that a Nintendo Revolution version has not been confirmed – something of a U-turn from the position it adopted on Resident Evil 4. Indeed Capcom’s survival horror classic was intended to be a GameCube exclusive until the Japanese company later back-tracked and decided to commence work on a PS2 port.

Few concrete details have emerged as yet, but scans suggest that we’ll see proper zombies making a welcome return, while an altogether brighter, sunnier setting appears to be the order of the day. Speculation suggests that Chris Redfield (star of Resident Evil and Code Veronica) will be making a comeback.

In terms of the gameplay style, the over-the-shoulder view favoured in Resident Evil 4 has been retained, while Jun Takeuchi (of Street Fighter 2 and the Onimusha fame) is said to be acting as the game’s producer.

A release date has yet to be confirmed, but fans will have to wait until late next year at the earliest. One nugget of hope is that Capcom will port over Resident Evil 4’s game engine to the next gen platforms and save itself considerable development time; but as ever we’ll have to wait and see.

With the news now ‘out there’ it’s expected that Capcom will be keen to formally announce Resident Evil 5 in the coming days. Check back for more news soon.
