Diablo 3 beta shutdown date announced

Blizzard finally gets ready for launch.

The Diablo 3 beta goes offline on 1st May, developer Blizzard has announced.

The rabidly-anticipated action RPG sequel will then hit the shelves a few weeks later, on 15th May.

All beta accounts and character information will be reset, and you'll only be able to make forum posts on the game's official site if you've pre-purchased the title or have a StarCraft 2 or World of Warcraft game license attached to your Battle.net account.

"We'd like to thank everyone who has participated in the Diablo 3 beta," read a Blizzard blog post earlier today.

"You've done an admirable job of testing, and we greatly appreciate all of the feedback you provided during this critical phase of development."

Eurogamer's Oli Welsh lavished all manner of superlatives on the beta when he tried it out last August.

"Even after completing the beta twice over, it was painful tearing myself away from it; it's so disarmingly gratifying and deceptively sophisticated, and so, so much fun. This tantalising preview will only stoke your cravings," warned his Diablo 3 preview.
