The canned Starbreeze game has turned out to be The Bourne Ascendancy.

Internet hawk Superannuation found confirmation on the personal website of Mikael Lindgren, "a freelance video game designer" whose most recent project was "The Bourne Ascendency (Cancelled)". Lindgren credits himself as game director and notes the developer as Starbreeze and the publisher as EA.

Starbreeze confirmed, in March last year, that one of two EA-published games had been scrapped. The binned project was rumoured to be this Bourne game - which we now know to be true - and the surviving game rumoured to be a revamp of Syndicate.

EA hasn't confirmed a Syndicate game, but a flurry of trademarks were dug up late last summer suggesting that was the case.

That would explain why 2K Games has opted to use Dark Sector developer Digital Extremes to develop The Darkness II rather than creator Starbreeze.

Starbreeze's excellent Darkness.
