The movies that SHOULD have won the Best Picture Oscar every year – according to the stats
And the times the Academy got it wrong.

Every year, the Oscars is the most hotly-debated award ceremony in the movies. And half the time, we reckon the Academy gets it wrong. Of course, it's somewhat subjective but how closely do the Academy's decisions match the critics?
We've analysed the Best Picture nominees from every year since 1980, looking at the Rotten Tomatoes score for each, and then compared the movie that got the highest rating with the one that won. (Dates refer to the year of the movies' releases, not the year the ceremony took place.)
We know Rotten Tomatoes is far from the most accurate aggregator of a movie's success since it only reflects the strength of critical consensus rather than the movie's true worth. But it is — for better or worse — the metric by which many people judge a movie's value. And so we, too, have succumbed to using it for our comparisons.
With that in mind, here are the films that should have won. You'll be surprised how rarely the Academy got it right...
1981 - The Coal Miner's Daughter
Family drama Ordinary People, directed by Robert Redford, actually took the top prize in a year when nominees also included Scorsese's Raging Bull, David Lynch's Elephant Man and Polanski's Tess. But Michael Apted's The Coal Miner's Daughter, a biopic of country singer Loretta Lynn, actually tops the lot, scoring a perfect 100%.
1982 - Atlantic City
The award went to the historical drama Chariots of Fire, but of the nominees, the crime romance Atlantic City starring Burt Reynolds and Susan Sarandon actually scores the highest. Even higher than Raiders of the Lost Ark, which also got a nod.
1990 - My Left Foot

Daniel Day-Lewis won the first of his three Best Actor Oscars for his portrayal of artist Christie Brown, who suffered from severe cerebral palsy. But on the night, Driving Miss Daisy took the top spot.
1992 - The Silence of the Lambs

The Academy gets it right! The critical consensus agrees that this was definitely the best of the nominees, which also included JFK and the animated Beauty and the Beast.
1994 - Schindler's List
The Academy nails it! Spielberg's moving WWII biopic won, and quite rightly too. Technically, fellow nominee The Remains of the Day has an equal Rotten Tomatoes score, but Schindler List's was the right choice.
1995 - Quiz Show
Going by the numbers alone, this very good (but hardly iconic) drama about quiz show fixing in the '50s should have taken the top prize instead of Forrest Gump. However, the other nominees were Four Weddings and a Funeral, Pulp Fiction and The Shawshank Redemption — not rated quite as high, but all a better choice than Gump.
1996 - Sense and Sensibility
Braveheart took the top prize, but Ang Lee's Jane Austen adaptation was way more popular with critics.
1997 - Secrets and Lies
We can perhaps understand why the Academy went for austere romance The English Patient over Mike Leigh's gritty Brit drama, but the critics didn't concur, giving Secrets & Lies the highest score of the nominees.
