If you are a Miyazaki fan you can put this in your cart right now!
This film is surprising, weird, funny and wonderful like all Miyazaki's!

This is a beautiful movie that really takes advantage of the 4k HDR disc.
A classic Miyazaki that is unpredictable and takes you to wonderful places!
I don't think it's the absolute best he's done but it's still very, very good. It's a little hard to identify with and keep track of the characters but it doesn't matter too much because I'll be watching it again!
At first it looks barely better than a blu ray. But as the picture goes on it seems they got better and better at using the format to full effect. Detail is only a little better than a blu ray disc but colors are much more nuanced and vibrant. HDR is utilized in well when depicting fire and sunlight streaming through the scenes.
Also surprisingly good is the audio. I believe this movie has the best audio/effects of any Ghibli film. A great use of your system for sure.
So it's probably the best looking and sounding Miyazaki film but I pray it isn't his last!
I'd love to see earlier Ghibli films given the 4K treatment as well but I'm so happy to have this to watch!

"The Boy and the Heron" is an exceptional film that combines stunning animation with a profound narrative. Directed by the renowned filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, this movie is a visual and emotional delight. The story follows a young boy's journey through a fantastical world, where he encounters a mysterious heron. The animation is breathtaking, showcasing Miyazaki's signature style and attention to detail.

The film's themes of loss, growth, and discovery are handled with depth and sensitivity, making it a compelling watch for audiences of all ages. The characters are well-developed, and the plot is both engaging and thought-provoking. The musical score complements the visuals perfectly, adding to the overall immersive experience.

Highly recommended for anyone who appreciates high-quality animation and storytelling. This film is a testament to Miyazaki's genius and a must-watch for fans of animated cinema.

This is such a wonderful movie. I’m so happy Miyazaki made another film. We’re lucky. Beautiful animation and creative story. We saw it when it came out and bought it as soon as it was available in digital format. Highly recommend.

Incredible "last" tale from a master storyteller and visionary.
He's gonna do more I bet, but the imagery alone on Boy/Heron=wow.
Seriously though, original Japanese voice track please!

I’m not an anime watcher so I’ve barely seen any but I went to go see this movie when it came out and it was absolutely stunning. I assure you, even if you’re not a anime fan either, this movie has the capability to capture you in a world of a breathtaking masterpiece. This beautiful steelbook’s cover barely captures the sheer and utter magnificence of this films art. It is a work of art through out the entire film, even if you are left wondering “what the heck is going on”, you cannot escape how gorgeous this movie is.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent film de Miyazaki
Reviewed in Canada on July 14, 2024

Handel
5.0 out of 5 stars Perhaps Miyazaki's best film.
Reviewed in Canada on July 11, 2024
As a lifelong fan of the works of Hayao Miyazaki, I would consider The Boy and the Heron to be the best movie of his career. It is perhaps a bit more challenging than some of his other films, but I think that's part of what makes it so engaging. It's not easy to just absorb in one go, but it's embedded with textured emotions. It's a fairy tale about processing grief, life and death. When I first saw it in theatres, I was thinking about it for days. The animation is just as good as you'd expect from a Ghibli film directed by Miyazaki. Particularly the opening sequence of the film. And the minimalist score is a standout for composer Joe Hisaishi.

I ordered the steelbook, and love the gorgeous packaging. I have a few Ghibli steelbooks now, and this one might be my favourite for the artwork.

Now, Amazon stupidly files all reviews for a single film, despite the fact that different releases or editions of a film might have different disc transfers, bonus features, etc.
That being said, whether you buy the standard blu-ray, or the 4K UHD disc, you'll get a fine transfer of the film either way. (also both editions are combo packs, the 4K comes with the blu-ray, and the blu-ray edition comes with a DVD) I would happily give 5 stars to any of the three releases of this film.

The film has a modest selection of bonus features (including the complete storyboards, a standard for almost all studio Ghibli home video releases). The film has both a Japanese track with literal English subtitles, and a dub. I prefer to watch any foreign film, animated or live action in the original language with subtitles. That being said, the English dub is excellent (particularly Robert Patterson as the Heron)

Highly, highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good, Deep, Philosophical Account of Miyazaki's Work
Reviewed in Canada on July 20, 2024
Good movie, stay tuned for a multitude of Miyazaki easter eggs. The movie is about death, life and rebirth and the consequences of making a fantasy world. The movie is set in the war era as most of his earlier films have been, including but not limited to Nausicaä, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Castle in the Sky, Kiki's Delivery Service, Totoro, The Wind Rises. Looking forward to his next work. Definitely recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Miyazaki’s First 4K Movie
Reviewed in Canada on July 15, 2024
Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli are now synonymous with some of the best animated features in the world. And now, just when we’d thought Miyazaki would stay in retirement after announcing he was leaving animation, he’s come back one more time with another tale of children in a world of the fantastical and a meditation on grief.

Beyond the quality of the movie, the important thing here is that this is hopefully just the first of future Studio Ghibli films in 4K. Expectations are riding high for this, and the image delivers. Keep in mind that, to a certain degree, this isn’t a “true” 4K film and might be considered an upscale. Studio Ghibli transitioned to digital filmmaking in the 00s, and the resolution is typically stored at 2K. However, even as an upscale, the sharpness is brilliant, and thanks to HDR, the colors are vibrant, with rich blacks and some strong, pleasing contrasts.

The audio is another treat, with a Dolby Atmos mix for both Japanese and English, so regardless of where you fall on the subs vs. dubs debate, you’ll still get a rich audio experience with the right home theater speaker setup. The Joe Hisaishi score soars and all the speakers get a workout for different scenes in the movie as it gets more surreal and fantastical.

There are a decent number of extras, but all of them are on the second disc, the Blu-Ray version of the movie; there’s nothing on the 4K disc. You get a feature-length storyboard, several interviews with some of the people involved in the film, but unfortunately not Miyazaki himself, a music video, and some teasers and trailers.

All in all, if you enjoyed this movie, the 4K version is worth adding to your collection. If you’re a Miyazaki fan and you hope this is just the first of many 4K films to come, including the classics of old, then you’ll probably want to show support and get this disc.
