Woocommerce plugin making site slow / too much queries

    Hi!

    I´ve been trying to solve this problem for a while and decided to approach you, because I haven´t found a solution to my problem.

    Our site is being very slow and I have gone through all the plugins one by one and found out, that even if Woocommerce is the only plugin besides theme (Avada) related plugins (Fusion builder and Avada core), the site will slow down considerably.

    I do think, that the problem is due to Woocommerce making between 100 and 200 queries to database no matter what page I try to visit (both front-end and back-end, looked into it with QM-plugin).

    I am having this issue aswell. I was trying to figure out why my back-end loading times were 10+ seconds. I disabled all plugins and re-enabled them one by one. As soon as I activated WooCommerce my back-end loading times severely increased..

    I understand that you have disabled all plugins except Avada theme and related plugins (Fusion builder and Avada core).

    Could you please check if the performance issue persists while on a default theme like Storefront or Twenty Twenty-Two and disabling all remaining plugins?

    The cause for this are the WooCommerce Onboarding Tasks. Possibly only in combination with translation plugins like WPML.

    The Onboarding Tasks are performing slow queries to determine e.g. whether the shop has any physical products.

    Automattic\WooCommerce\Admin\Features\OnboardingTasks\Tasks\Shipping::has_physical_products() looks innocent like this:

    Each of these queries takes roughly 0.5 seconds on an (highly optimized) larger database.

    They are executed multiple times with different conditions for different tasks, so WooCommerce slows down the backend page rendering of all backend pages by several seconds in total.

    A recent version fixed the case of the Shipping Onboarding Task, but two other cases are still remaining:

    Products::has_products() – which is invoked twice!

    TaskLists::setup_tasks_remaining() invokes the Products onboarding task two times, so the same expensive query is run twice.

    As all of those queries appear to be count queries, maybe WooCommerce should look into using wp_count_posts() instead. At least WPML seems to implement special handling for count queries (as opposed to regular queries).

    What’s worst about this is that the WooCommerce Onboarding isn’t even visible on all backend pages – to my knowledge it only appears on the WordPress Dashboard.

    So in addition to fixing the problematic queries themselves, Automattic\WooCommerce\Admin\Features\OnboardingTasks\TaskLists::init() should really limit all of this to the Dashboard page only.

    In fact, it’s not clear to me why the starting point for TaskLists are the init and admin_init hooks – instead of the WooCommerce Onboarding admin meta box.

    The whole Onboarding code should not run at all if the admin meta box is not enabled.

    Hello @tha_sun,

    I appreciate you updating your GitHub issue with what you’ve learned and for linking possibly related issues. To help others who may find this thread, the opening poster is reporting their issue affects both the front and back end, and their problem likely won’t be (at least not solely) the issues you mention.

    In the case of the opening poster the first step should be to reproduce the issue to only WooCommerce on a default theme like @tamirat22 recommended. We haven’t heard back from them, and I hope our advice helped them find the solution to their problem.

    Merchants experiencing a similar sounding issue should start a new topic so we can give each situation our full attention (ideally after some troubleshooting on their own). I invite such posters to link to this thread if they think it will help to get us a head start.

    Hi!

    Took some time to go through all the troubleshooting, but sadly my problem still persists. Even if I try to use Woocommerce as only plugin with a default theme (twenty seventeen), the amount of queries made to database ramps up from about 20 to over 100 versus not having Woocommerce activated. This makes my sites loading time from under 0,5 seconds without Woocommerce to between 3 and 7 seconds with Woocommerce activated. I don´t have that many products, product gategories etc. to explain this.

    I also went through Litespeed to see, wheter the problem was there. It did not help and the fact that the situation is not different wheter Litespeed Cache is activated or not tells to me that the problem seems not to be cahce-plugin related.

    Any ideas what I could try next?
