Error with site – I didn’t receive email

When I checked my website today, it showed the “There has been a significant errror.” message. I updated and deleted some plugins and that quickly fixed it.
The issue is that I didn’t receive an email with a notification that something is wrong. As you can imagine, that is not good situation if it is not a site that you go to multiple times a day (I actually found out because a colleague called me).
I do have my email address saved in general settings and I checked junk in my mailbox. Nothing.
Is there something I am missing?
