After updating some plug-ins, I got this message when I tried to do to the dashboard to update some things on the site.

There has been a critical error on this website. Please check your site admin email inbox for instructions.

I’m a parent volunteer running this site so I need things in laymen’s terms, please.

  • Do you have access to the site admin email inbox so you can see the email the site sent with instructions?

If not, do you have access to the web hosting to view the server error logs to see the error?

If you can’t find the email, try manually resetting your plugins (no Dashboard access required). If that resolves the issue, reactivate each one individually until you find the cause.

If that does not resolve the issue, access your server via SFTP or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel (consult your hosting provider’s documentation for specifics on these), navigate to /wp-content/themes/ and rename the directory of your currently active theme. Hopefully, this will force the default theme to activate and rule out a theme-specific issue (theme functions can interfere like plugins).

Thank you. I ended up reaching out to GoDaddy since they host the site. They were able to fix my problem.
