I’m having an issue with my WooCommerce store where out of state users are getting an error message that says “Zip Code does not match the selected state.” A handful of out of state orders have gone through, so it’s hard to tell if it’s only certain states, certain users, etc. For reference, the store is located in Texas and the errors have occurred for users in Colorado and Oregon so far that I know of.

    Hi,

The error message you’re encountering, “Zip Code does not match the selected state,” typically occurs when there’s a mismatch between the provided ZIP code and the selected state during the checkout process in WooCommerce. This error is often related to tax calculation, shipping, or address validation settings.

Here are some steps to help you diagnose and resolve this issue:

    1. Check Tax Settings:
    • Go to your WooCommerce settings.
    • Click on the “Tax” tab.
    • Review your tax settings, including the tax rates for different states. Ensure that the tax rates are correctly configured for each state.
    • Check if you have any custom tax rules or plugins that might be causing conflicts.
    1. Verify Address Validation:
    • WooCommerce has an address validation feature that can help ensure that the ZIP code matches the selected state. Make sure this feature is enabled in your settings.
    • Go to WooCommerce > Settings > General > Enable the “Address Validation” option.
    • Configure the address validation settings as needed.
    1. Shipping Zones and Methods:
    • Check your shipping zones and methods to see if any specific rules or restrictions are causing the issue.
    • Go to WooCommerce > Settings > Shipping and review your shipping zones and methods. Ensure that the ZIP codes and states are correctly configured.
    1. Payment Gateway Settings:
    • Certain payment gateways may have address verification settings that affect checkout. Review the settings of your chosen payment gateway (e.g., PayPal, Stripe) to make sure they’re set up correctly.
    1. Third-Party Plugins and Themes:
    • Sometimes, conflicts with third-party plugins or themes can lead to checkout errors. Temporarily deactivate plugins one by one to see if any specific plugin is causing the issue.
    • Switch to a default WordPress theme (e.g., Twenty Twenty-One) temporarily to check if the issue is related to your current theme.
    1. Browser and Cache Issues:
    • Ask affected users to try different web browsers or devices to see if the issue persists.
    • Clear browser cache and cookies, as sometimes outdated data can cause problems during checkout.
    1. Testing and Monitoring:
    • Test the checkout process with different ZIP codes and states to reproduce the issue.
    • Monitor your server logs, WooCommerce logs, and any error messages to gather more information about the problem.

By systematically checking these factors, you should be able to identify and resolve the “Zip Code does not match the selected state” error in your WooCommerce store.

    Hi @knockdownshooter

Based on the information you’ve shared, there might be a problem with the configuration of your shipping settings. The error message that out-of-state users are seeing typically indicates a mismatch between the state and zip code they are entering.

While it’s hard to determine without further investigation, it’s possible the issue is related to specific shipping zones or methods set up for Colorado and Oregon. I recommend checking your WooCommerce shipping settings to ensure they are configured correctly for these states.

If you continue to experience this issue after checking the shipping settings, please get back to us with the following:

    • System Status Report: navigate to WooCommerce → Status. Select Get system report and then Copy for support.
    • Fatal Error log: Share a copy of any fatal error log found under WooCommerce → Status → Logs.

You could copy and paste your reply or share it via https://pastebin.com/ and send the link here. This will help us investigate further and provide you with a more accurate solution.

Let us know how that goes. Looking forward to helping you.

    Re: Option 1:

The above has NEVER existed in any of my woocommerce settings, locally, online, old or new. Where do I actually find this?

    Hi @knockdownshooter!

There’s a similar issue reported in the WooCommerce Blocks repo: https://github.com/woocommerce/woocommerce-blocks/issues/10847. Can you confirm the issue is similar and that you’re using WooCommerce Shipping & Tax?

If so, I’d suggest following the issue for further updates.

    Thanks!

@knockdownshooter I see from your website that you are using the Checkout block.

Could you help us with some testing steps for trying to replicate the issue. Please offer as many details as possible.

    • what country, city and zip code combination was inputed when the error appeared
    • what was the taxes/shipping setup for those localtions.

We won’t be able to understand what is going on unless we are able to replicate this on our end.

    Thank you!

We’re consistently having state and zip code validation issues as well. We can’t seem to fix them. It’s intermittent and random at best. Sometimes when we’re calculating shipping we’ll get an error that says can’t calculate even if the state and zip code are correct. How do we fix?

    Hi @jqb2000,

I suggest that you start a new thread with your case, so that we don’t mix several troubleshooting sessions in one thread.

Even if the symptoms are the same, perhaps the underlying problem is different in your case.

    Cheers.
