Most popular web hosting providers by country

Posted by Matthias Gelbmann on 22 March 2016 in News, Web Hosting

Summary:

W3Techs presents a world map showing which web hosting provider is the most popular one in each country.

While the GoDaddy Group is the most popular web hosting provider in the world, there are very significant regional differences in the web hosting business.

We have created this world map by coloring each country according to the most popular web hosting provider within the top level domains of that region.

GoDaddy is not only most popular in the world, they also dominate web hosting in the USA, Canada, Mexico, India and several smaller countries.

The German provider Hetzner is very popular in Russia, Iran, South-East Europe from Austria to Greece, as well as South Africa and surrounding countries. Interestingly, in it's home country Germany, they are only second behind the Host Europe Group.

The French provider OVH dominates France, Belgium, Spain and most of the francophone countries in Africa.

Amazon is not only the fastest growing hosting provider, they have a strong presence in most countries. They are the number 1 in Australia, New Zealand, and a number of countries in Asia, Africa, and Central and South America.

The Deutsche Telekom Group acquired several companies in Eastern Europe, and they now dominate hosting in Hungary and Romania via their subsidiaries.

Similarly, United Internet is the most popular provider in the UK mostly due to the strong position of 1&1 Internet and Fasthosts in this market.

A large number of providers dominate their home market, but have a relatively weak market penetration in the rest of the world. This is, for example, the Aruba Group in Italy, home.pl in Poland, Locaweb in Brazil, Sakura in Japan, the KT Group in South Korea, Chunghwa Telecom in Taiwan and China Telecom in China. This continues in many smaller countries such as Cuba where the hosting scene, insofar as there is one, is totally dominated by Empresa de Telecomunicaciones de Cuba. These smaller providers cannot be shown on the map because we run out of colors.

Several of the really big names in the hosting business are not represented here, for example Rackspace, DigitalOcean or the Endurance Group. This is simply because these companies happen to be strong number 2 or 3 in many important regions, but we show only the number 1 provider per country on this map.

This map, together with a lot more information is included in our monthly Web Hosting Providers Market Report. Relevant sections of the hosting statistics are also included in our other monthly reports.
