Four years of W3Techs.com

In our traditional review of the last year of this W3Techs, which went online 4 years ago, we can list these highlights:

• We have included data on the usage of ETags, IPv6 and SPDY in our surveys.
• We introduced technology usage comparison pages.
• We have extended our sample size to cover the top 10 million websites.
• We cover Tag Managers as new technology category.
• We keep adding technologies in existing categories. We cover now, for instance, 137 content management systems, 136 traffic analysis tools and 82 advertising networks, and the list is growing every month.

Occasionally, we publish a blog entry that gets lots of attention in the media and in social networks. In the last year, the most talked-about entries were:

• jQuery now runs on every second website
• The PNG image file format is now more popular than GIF
• PHP version 5.3 is now the most used version, just ahead of 5.2
• and only last week:
  Nginx just became the most used web server among the top 1000 websites

We are proud that usage of our surveys keeps growing, and we take this as a sign that our hard work to provide the most reliable source of information on web technology usage is recognized by our visitors. W3Techs is now mentioned

• in over 400 Wikipedia entries (up from 200 a year ago)
• in more than 160 books
• in more than 270 scientific papers
• in 175 presentations on SlideShare alone.

The web is evolving fast, and so is our site. One day per year we take the time to look back, while at the same time we are already planning exciting things for the year ahead.
