Chancellor

Dr Reuel Jethro Khoza was appointed Chancellor of the University of KwaZulu-Natal in October 2021. An experienced business and transformation leader, Dr Khoza isan acclaimed author, distinguished pioneer, and renowned voice at the forefront of transformation in the South African political economy.

As UKZN Chancellor, he serves as the titular head of the University presiding at the annual graduation ceremonies, conferring degrees and awarding diplomas and certificates in the name of the University, among other functions.

Dr Khoza currently serves as President of the Institute of Directors in South Africa (IoDSA). He is also the Chairman of Dzana Investments (Pty) Ltd, Public Investment Corporation (PIC), and Assupol Insurance Group, to name a few.

Previously, he has chaired the boards of a number of corporations and entities, including Globeleq, GlaxoSmithKline South Africa; and served as a Director of JSE Limited, IBM South Africa, Liberty Life Group, Standard Bank Group, Nampak Limited, and Old Mutual plc.

Dr Khoza has been involved in the formulation of the King Codes on Corporate Governance in King II, King III and King IV; serving as Mervyn King's Deputy on King III and King IV, respectively.

His qualifications include a BA Hons in Psychology (University of Limpopo, previously University of the North); a MA in Marketing (University of Lancaster, UK); a doctorate in Business Leadership from Warwick University UK; a LLD honoris causa (Rhodes University), and D Econ honoris causa (University of Free State). Dr Khoza is also a Chartered Director (CD SA) and author whose books include Attuned Leadership, Let Africa Lead, The African in my Dream, and The Power of Governance (with Mohamed Adam).

UKZN is honoured to have Dr Khoza a top executive who has proven himself as a respected and inspirational leader whose experience in the public and national interest will auger well for our institution – as its Chancellor.

He is appointed to serve the University for a period of four years.
