Media industry outlook - A spotlight on innovation reliefs. Here are some of the standout findings from our research - I’d love to hear your views?   💡19% of industry professionals strongly agree that “the UK government supports the media and creative industries”. The UK Government aims to boost R&D investment to 2.4% of the UK’s GDP by 2027, but should more be done for businesses?   💸 95% submitted a claim for a form of tax relief but many still missing out, with only 46% submitting a claim for creative tax reliefs.   💸46% submitted a claim for creative sector reliefs and 40% submitted an R&D claim. However given the innovative nature of the industry, many could still be missing out on unlocking valuable funding.   📝33% made a claim which was approved by HMRC but later challenged, resulting in repayment. A further 33% made a claim that was rejected but later approved by HMRC whilst the remaining businesses submitted a claim which was challenged by HMRC and later declined.   📝HMRC challenge more that 50% of claims - a third made a claim which was approved but it was later challenged and they had to repay HMRC. A further 33% made a claim that was rejected but later approved by HMRC whilst the remaining businesses submitted a claim which was challenged by HMRC and later declined.   Overall, the changing R&D landscape and increased scrutiny from HMRC might mean the UK becomes a less attractive place for creative businesses to set up. This is a very well-informed and detailed examination of the complex and murky area of 'principal-based' media buying with particularly insightful comments from Ruben Schreurs It shows just how difficult it is for Advertisers to truly know what is going on in their name and with their money, so seeking independent advice, the tightest contractual terms and the most thorough audit rights are all vital to avoid the many elephant traps. But why has the world of media reached a point where the advertiser has to count their fingers after they've shaken hands with their media agency? Radical new approaches to accountability and transparency are needed, but these have to include a grown-up discussion about terms of business. We can't get to a point where fees are zero and all the margin is made on media trading, surely?

💯Great article on the transformation of Havas led mostly by the implementation and adoption of AI. What they are dealing with is applicable to more than just the advertising industry and should resonate specifically with the content and language industries. Here are the words from the Havas CEO which could not be clearer⬇ "Advertising agencies would need to work harder to justify their fees if their clients were able to use the same AI tools that made the more basic roles easier. “If the client can replicate what we are doing with AI internally, there is no point to work with and to pay a communication agency or companies such as Havas. What I want is having the best tool available for the best talents.”" 🤔In presentations and meetings with some LSPs since a couple of years I have highlighted and discussed the impact of internalized language management in progress or to come in some client organizations. Buyers invest a lot in generative AI and part of the ROI of these investments is the expected reduction of outsourced multilingual content operations with associated savings. Generative AI enables client organizations to do more in house provided that they have the right human resources, business processes and technology ecosystems in place. Therefore, they will consider suppliers that ⬇ ✅Embrace AI-driven change and adapt their teams and processes to new client needs accordingly ✅Stay relevant by creating value ✅Create value for money

Will WPP be broken up or sold? Good reporting below by Digiday's Ronan Shields. The Mercer Island Group view: 1. WPP is so big and in such a chaotic industry (AI impacts, in-housing, etc.) for a PE takeover to make much sense 2. A merger with any of the other major holdcos is unlikely - the merger partner would be taking on a new bundle of challenges with a very uncertain path to success 3. They have generally maxed out on mergers with many of the large pieces already "merged" (VML eating Wunderman, Essence marrying Mediacom, the recent Burson moves, etc.); the result is that over 90% of WPP's 114,000 employees can be found in a small group that includes GroupM, VML, Ogilvy, AKQA, Hogarth and 3 PR entities. Might they split off GroupM from the rest? There is an argument for that... but also headwinds on the client side where more integration is desired. So, what may happen? Travis Lusk Good to see you highlighting this report again. It needs to remain in the spotlight even at the risk of repetition for those already aware. Bill must be able to recite this blindfold. Yes, we need more advertisers adopting the extremely comprehensive playbooks in the report and hopefully they will. Education is the key. But more than anything we need the big agency groups to gradually wean themselves off the drug of easy money from programmatic trading, arbitrage and undisclosed margins. No agency group has supported the study and they won't, so advertisers have to make it clear that they won't allow this to continue and then work through new compensation methods that work for both parties. Trying to fix this problem without addressing fees and performance-led rewards is not going to shift the needle. Bill Duggan Association of National Advertisers

The $700bn delusion - continued. Well my little Mi3 piece about the pros and cons of digital advertising targeting seems to have gone down well. Actually with alarmingly little disagreement. Especially given that some of the people out there in LinkedInLand are the ones spending that $700Bn on data driven ad targeting. The lack of argument from the opposition is almost as alarming as those studies. Almost. I am conscious that more anecdotal evidence isn’t really evidence at all, but here’s Ben Shepherd further making my point. In the face of congruence do we really want to wait for proof to magically appear? Even if we agreed that tailoring the advertising content beyond the obvious was profitably more effective, (dear reader, we may not), the data you’re using to target the tailored creative is a combination of shit, horseshit, bullshit and assorted other types of excrement. The whole exercise looks like a $700bn house of cards. “Custom IT decision-maker segments are no more helpful for finding the desired audience than random prospecting from a digital publisher network.” Time for some very grown up conversations I feel. The rollout is upon us! Google's AI Overview (the new name for SGE, which I'm going to instinctively shorten to AIO) is now live in the US, and will be hitting the UK and Europe within weeks. Luckily for me, the very generous Matt Meazey, our Head of SEO, spent some time talking me through the latest news yesterday - filling me in on everything Google had to say - and we hit "record" in the hopes that it's useful to others (especially the non-technical folk, like me!) The whole Fountain Partnership team is excited to get stuck in to the change that this will introduce to search engine optimisation and paid ads. It's unlikely this will land without some disruption - so if you're relying on online sales for your business, it's important to get a plan in place as soon as possible. If you have no idea what this is all about, it's the way search results will be shown on Google, now using AI summaries for a proportion of results pages. We're in the countdown phase to ProcureCon Europe Series in London on June 4th and 5th. Media Procurement is now a vital discipline within advertisers, especially with channels such as Retail Media, Digital Commerce and Connected TV exploding. These present new opportunities and risks that Procurement can help manage. All three revolve around the use of consumer data to improve effectiveness and its measurement. So new ways to manage data are required alongside the financial considerations that preoccupy Procurement. Media Procurement needs to help achieve positive outcomes not just 'savings' or 'value'. Advertisers are buying the media, not just the infrastructure around it. So more focus on what good media looks like is needed.
