👏 We’re proud to announce that our Regional Connector Project in Downtown Los Angeles was awarded Rail Transit Project of the Year at the 35th Annual CALIFORNIA TRANSPORTATION FOUNDATION Transportation Awards. 🏆 By offering an alternative to congested roadways, the Regional Connector encourages a modal shift from car to #rail transport. This brings potential environmental benefits, while improved access to transport and shorter journey times open new opportunities for people throughout Los Angeles County. 🚆 The Regional Connector links Los Angeles Metro’s entire 80-station system to southern California’s regional passenger rail system, Metrolink, which services 55 stations. We were involved from 2014 as detail designer for Regional Connector Constructors (RCC), a joint venture between Skanska USA and Traylor Bros., Inc. Sydney’s streetlights first flickered to life on 8 July 1904, when the switch key was turned at the Pyrmont Power Station. 💡 The arc lamps in the new system created both heat and light – once luxuries only the wealthy could afford to purchase through private companies. The Australian coal-powered station designed by Major Philip Cardew of our predecessor firm, Preece & Cardew, included four steam turbines turning generators. These produced three-phase alternating current (AC) electricity at 5kV. The current was converted to direct current at #substations, for distribution through a three-wire network supplying arc #lighting in the city centre. Over the next few years, Thomas Rooke of Preece & Cardew oversaw work to increase capacity and transmit this throughout the city and surrounding areas – expanding #electricity supply for manufacturing and domestic use. This world-leading expertise in #electrification has been called on around the world and our state of the art systems powered tramways, railways, streetlights, factories, and homes, stitching together the fabric of society. Today, we face new challenges that demand the same levels of innovative thinking and #TechnicalExcellence, to help nations meet the challenge of providing power to people and businesses as part of sustainable #CarbonNeutral economies. Stay tuned for more on this story when we revisit it in a new season of our #heritage podcast series with Engineering Matters later this year. In the meantime, you can explore our heritage, here. 👇 https://mottm.ac/3se6rmo #ThenNowTomorrow Images courtesy of City of Sydney Archives

Our early career Strategic Design Partnership (SDP) leads, Chuxuan Zhang and Nuwanthi Thennakoonwela, teamed up with early career leads from Jacobs, AtkinsRéalis, and Balfour Beatty plc, to host a hybrid carbon-themed hackathon. Early career representatives from all four companies worked together, to devise innovative tools and streamlined processes for #CarbonReduction. The hackathon showcased fantastic outcomes and the winning team emerged with an industry-ready tool that holds immense promise. This achievement underscores the power of #collaboration in addressing climate challenges, paving the way toward a more #sustainable future. We firmly believe we can drive meaningful change by working together, and the Strategic Design Partnership exemplifies this commitment. Well done to all of the participants, including our very own Adam Attwater, Joshua Farnsworth, Troy Loxley and Lydia Wong! Stay tuned for updates on our journey toward carbon neutrality. #Sustainability #EarlyCareers

The vulnerability of subsea power cables, supply chain constraints and geographical limitations can pose major challenges for interconnector and offshore wind projects. Subsea power cables, that link turbines to onshore substations, are prone to failures that account for a significant portion of offshore wind insurance claims, despite representing only a small fraction of the overall costs. Additionally, the increasing demand for these cables has strained the global supply chain, making it difficult to secure production slots and installation vessels within project timelines. Furthermore, congested coastal areas and limited undersea cable corridors, further complicate the installation process, especially in regions like Singapore. So how can we address these constraints? ⚡ Developers need to proactively secure supply commitments and production slots early in the project lifecycle to mitigate supply chain risks. ⚡ Exploration of alternative installation techniques such as long and deep water-to-water and water-to-land horizontal directional drilling methods can circumvent geographical limitations and congested coastal areas. ⚡ Consideration of technology such as 400kV Subsea 3-core cables and Single Core bundled cables that present a potential cost-effective solution to enhance HVAC transmission capacity within smaller corridors where feasible. ⚡ HVDC technology offers the unique capability to build long underwater or underground cable transmission lines with low losses and limited corridor requirements

Each of the main parties hoping to win the general election have bold plans for infrastructure investment but having the people to deliver it is a significant challenge – and one that will need government commitment to tackle. Richard Risdon, our managing director for UK and Europe, has shed light on this pressing issue in an article for New Civil Engineer. The recent figures from the CITB highlight that we will need an additional 251,500 workers by 2028 to meet the ambitious goals of currently planned national infrastructure projects. Meeting this need cannot be addressed by individual companies alone but through a call to action for the entire industry and government to collaborate on a strategic approach. In the article, Richard proposes five fundamentals to tackle the skills challenge. The fundamentals include digital delivery, promoting STEM education, transforming the Apprenticeship Levy, implementing a responsive immigration system, and marketing the construction sector effectively. All five can be addressed by the government, with industry support, to build the workforce of tomorrow. We are proud to be working in collaboration with Engineers Australia to conduct research into the transferability of engineering skills for the clean #EnergyTransition. This week, at Parliament House, Engineers Australia presented the findings in a session attended by government, academia, and industry leaders. The insights covered various aspects including employment, geographic considerations, engineering labour force, training pathways and policy recommendations. Initial research indicates that professionals and communities are adeptly navigating the shift toward #RenewableEnergy, and with additional support and better coordination, the pathway towards a #NetZero workforce in the energy sector is achievable. The full report will be available in August, however you can learn more about the key emerging insights and what is needed to ensure no-one is left behind and that thriving communities can continue to be a hub for jobs and families into the future here: https://mottm.ac/4bqPglX
