A new report from the National Engineering Policy Centre (NEPC), led by the Royal Academy of Engineering and co-chaired by our group head of strategy, Simon Harrison, calls for a radical approach to drive the major infrastructure and system transformation needed to decarbonise the GB #electricity system and provide clean power by 2030. The report, ‘Rapid Decarbonisation of the GB Electricity System’, shares recommendations for delivering the grid, generation and system flexibility under an accelerated timescale. It also highlights the need for government to set out the value of this target as a national mission, in a similar way to the work of the vaccines task force. Find out more about the six key elements required in the government’s delivery plan to achieve its #CleanPower mission. 👇 https://mottm.ac/3LC7oPy

Where the #HS2 route crosses three existing railway lines in the UK, the vital West Coast Main Line that links London to Glasgow had to be closed for ‘offline’ bridge construction – and the new bridges were positioned in mere hours. Construction of all three #bridges presented a common challenge: to minimise disruption to existing rail services. This called for a hybrid solution in Streethay, strand jacking in Kenilworth, and an 840-wheeled transporter in Fulfen Wood to facilitate the heaviest #bridge move of its type. Discover how we tackled the challenge as #engineering designer for joint venture contractor Balfour Beatty VINCI on all three HS2 (High Speed Two) Ltd projects. 👇 https://mottm.ac/3UTSHLN #HighSpeedRail #Transportation

How can we give greater power to regions to address the needs and priorities of our communities? 🌍 In England, UK, the role and influence of metro mayors is growing. Strong local roots and an understanding of specific regional challenges and opportunities, make them ideal intermediaries between citizens and central government to help develop policies to tackle key issues. Kerry Scott, our global leader for #environment and society, explores the transformative influence they can have once the trust and support of the electorate is earned. 👇 https://mottm.ac/3Y1twtU #SocialValue #LocalGovernment #MetroMayors

We’re thrilled to announce that we have successfully completed the rehabilitation of the Knight Street Bridge in Vancouver, Canada🙌. As part of TransLink's Maintenance and Upgrade Program, this critical project ensures the safety and reliability of the bridge for more than the 100,000 vehicles that cross it daily. By providing detailed design and construction support, we helped build the largest polyester polymer concrete (PPC) re-surfacing job in British Columbia. PPC, an innovative and highly durable material, offers all-weather high-skid resistance and efficient repairs due to its rapid curing times. This bridge is the main artery between Port of Vancouver’s downtown terminals, providing a vital link for the delivery of essential supplies and other goods to the region’s stores 🚚. We are proud to contribute to Metro #Vancouver’s community and infrastructure. Want to learn more? Click 👇: https://mottm.ac/3SdciGi #Translink #Infrastructure #EngineeringExcellence

🚇 How do you excavate a world beating #tunnel from both sides of a river with precision accuracy but without computers or modern technology? 🎙️ Uncover how our innovative predecessors achieved this amazing feat in our latest #heritage podcast with Engineering Matters. We delve into the story behind the construction of the incredible Queensway Tunnel and its impact on the #tunnelling industry on its 90th anniversary. 👇 https://mottm.ac/4bUjQo9 In the 1930s, some of our best engineers accepted the challenge to build the huge circular road #tunnel beneath the River Mersey, which spans 13.4m in diameter and runs for 3.4km to connect Liverpool and Birkenhead, UK. The sheer size of the #QueenswayTunnel made it the largest subaqueous tunnel in the world at that time and the country’s largest ever municipal #engineering project. Its opening was so successful on 18 July 1934, that three decades later the city decided to build another and its sister, the Kingsway Tunnel, opened in 1971. These innovative contributions set new global standards for tunnel structures, enabling us to deliver critical connections between people and places today. Ninety years on, we’re proud to support Merseytravel with operations and maintenance of the tunnels to ensure they perform well into the future. #ThenNowTomorrow #CivilEngineering Images courtesy of Merseytravel

We're proud to have supported the outline planning application for Edgware Town Centre – a transformative masterplan that brings extensive new opportunity to this north London community. Driven by our client Ballymore, in partnership with Places for London, the proposed development will bring forward over 3,000 homes, many of which will be affordable - as well as more than doubling the existing commercial, retail, leisure and community facilities on the site. #ActiveTravel will be promoted throughout the scheme, with access opened up to green space that has been closed off to the public for almost 100 years. Plus, a new transport hub will be delivered, future-proofed to support a #ZeroEmissions London bus fleet. We have provided multi-disciplinary engineering services including civil and structural, transport planning, strategic sustainability services, and fire engineering. We’ve been pleased to collaborate with partners across the industry including Howells Gustafson Porter + Bowman Field Consulting UK Hoare Lea Ashurst Hutchinson & Partners Gardiner & Theobald LLP Trium Environmental Consulting LLP Delva Patman Redler LLP Quod

The #KingsSpeech at the State Opening of Parliament today set out the plans and policies to be brought forward by the new Labour government. Richard Risdon, our managing director for UK and Europe, has responded to the proposals on investment in #infrastructure in the King’s Speech: “Since the election it has been encouraging to see the pace at which the new government is starting to put its manifesto commitments into action. The King’s Speech adds to the momentum by setting out the legislative agenda for the next few months, which is critical for both us and our clients." https://mottm.ac/4668qN3
