Have you noticed that, recently, consumer behaviour has been more contradictory than usual? 🤔 Take for example the recent “No spend challenge” on TikTok that has led non-essential spending to hit a 2-year low according to Barclays data. This challenge is an example of a heightened yo-yo effect of spending - consumers have been battling the need to splurge and treat themselves with the cost of living crisis for a few years now. They sway between the two extremes - saving on some items, splurging on others. Using our trends-tracking platform SHIFTs, we’ve been watching this pattern for a while! So we decided to pursue this train of thought to understand how it translates into wider consumer and commerce trends.
