Teri Carter is a rural opinion columnist focused on Kentucky politics.

In 2022, she changed her registration from Democrat to Republican to run for county magistrate (and lost) in order to investigate how local elections work from the inside. She also testified at the state capitol against bills for college campus concealed-carry and becoming a gun sanctuary.

In 2023, she joined forces with Moms Demand Action to fight for reasonable gun laws in Kentucky’s Republican-controlled state legislature.

Teri has a BA in English from the University of Minnesota and an MFA in nonfiction writing from San Jose State University. She is on the board of the Society of Professional Journalists – Bluegrass Region.
