This week’s Tumblr Tuesday adds another twist!
The Dashboard now occasionally features blogs recommended by the people you follow.
Over the past couple of weeks, we have slowly rolled out a spiffy new version of Tumblr on the web. Here’s a smattering of goodies in the update:
Some of these visual changes are obvious, but the biggest transformation is the one you can’t see. This wasn’t just a facelift, we completely updated the web interface. The old one was outdated—over a decade old. Adding features to it wasn’t always easy, fixing bugs wasn’t always quick. It was clear that we needed to update the whole dang thing. So update the whole dang thing we did. The result? A faster Tumblr. The experience is smoother, it’s easier to add new features, and we’re able to squash any pesky bugs quicker than before.
This kind of web interface change means that some of your Tumblr browser extensions may not work. We understand how important these extensions are to those of you who want to customize your Tumblr experience as much as possible. Throughout this process, we’ve stayed in close communication with the people over at @new-xkit-extension to make sure our update was one that they could work with. We provided them with APIs they needed to begin moving over to this new platform. This also gave us the opportunity to discuss the benefits their extension brings to the community. Having their input on what makes their service valuable to the people who use it has been a true treat, and one we are grateful for. While XKit isn’t an official Tumblr tool, it’s one we know is dear to many of you, and we don’t take that lightly. If you have any concerns, we encourage you to read more about what they have to say over here. Be sure to follow them to stay updated on their process!
Yeah, you. When we first began testing this new interface with a small selection of you, we received some really useful feedback. We want to make sure that continues, so we created a survey. While we always read the reblogs on our announcement posts, this survey is the best way to let us know exactly how you feel about this update. And don’t worry—it’s anonymous. We won’t know who you are unless you make it your business to tell us so. Head on over there and share your thoughts now.
You read that right: We’re upgrading Ad-free Browsing to a bigger, better package—based on your feedback and wishes. We hope you like it!
So, what’s in the box?
Alongside the beloved ad-free dash, every month, Premium subscribers will get one free Blaze and a free item in TumblrMart (except Premium itself, and some of the badges you have to earn)—to gift or use for yourself—as well as increased posting and liking limits and early access to experimental features like Communities and Patio! All for $6.99/month or $69.99/year (that’s 15% off when paying annually).
Are you a current ad-free browser? You’ll get an email from us about the price change and have 30+ days to decide if you want to keep your subscription. In the meantime, you’ll have Premium at the current price. You can manage your subscription right now here.

HUGE Theme Upgrades!
We just enabled a massive list of new Appearance Options for theme designers including Custom Fonts, Booleans (useful for toggling options), Custom Text (useful for enabling widgets), and Custom Images!
Some of these features are already available in Jacob Bijani’s and Peter Vidani’s themes, so try them out.
Designers - here’s a quick preview of what’s now possible:
<html> <head> <meta name="image:Background" content="https://static.tumblr.com/..."/> <meta name="image:Header" content=""/> <meta name="font:Body" content="Arial"/> <meta name="text:Flickr Username" content=""/> <style type="text/css"> body { background: #2D567C url('{image:Background}'); font: normal 14px {font:Body}; } </style> </head> <body> {block:IfHeaderImage} <img src="{image:Header}"/> {/block:IfHeaderImage}{block:IfNotHeaderImage} <h1>{title}</h1> {/block:IfNotHeaderImage}{block:IfFlickrUsername} <div id="flickr_widget"> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://flickr.com/widget?user={text:Flickr Username}"> </script> </div> {/block:IfFlickrUsername} </body> </html>
Tomorrow morning we’ll be promoting all the themes with these new options enabled, so hurry!
We’re about to start rolling out a bunch of features focused on interaction between tumblelog authors and their readers. Post notes are going to be the glue for all of this interaction, so we’d like to ask all theme designers (and anyone with custom themes) to incorporate this new tag:
{PostNotes}
This will render the post’s notes (including reblogs and likes) on their permalink pages. Check out an example on my tumblelog.
Unlike our other theme tags, this outputs generic HTML markup, so all you need to do is style it with CSS. Here’s a basic stylesheet to get you started:
ol.notes { padding: 0px; margin: 25px 0px; list-style-type: none; border-bottom: solid 1px #ccc; } ol.notes li.note { border-top: solid 1px #ccc; padding: 10px; } ol.notes li.note img.avatar { vertical-align: -4px; margin-right: 10px; width: 16px; height: 16px; } ol.notes li.note span.action { font-weight: bold; } ol.notes li.note .answer_content { font-weight: normal; } ol.notes li.note blockquote { border-color: #eee; padding: 4px 10px; margin: 10px 0px 0px 25px; } ol.notes li.note blockquote a { text-decoration: none; }
You can get the full documentation (including complementary tags like {NoteCount}
) on the Custom Themes page.
In our ongoing effort to help you all determine your own experience here on Tumblr, we’re launching one of our most requested features: the ability to filter out posts from your dashboard based on their tags.
Trying to avoid #Star Wars spoilers? Filter them out. Need a break from all the #holiday excitement this month? Sheesh, fine. Filter it out. It’s your dashboard. Groom it well.
Where do I set up a tag filter?
In your settings! You’ll find it in your general settings on mobile, under “Filtering.” On the web, you’ll find it in your account settings, also under “Filtering.”
That makes sense. Will I know when stuff is being filtered out?
Yup. Just like with Safe Mode, you’ll see a placeholder in your dashboard wherever something is being hidden. If you actually do want to see it, you can click/tap on it, and it’ll appear.
I follow some real nimrods. How can I stop seeing their posts?
Unfollow them! And if they’re really being a jerk, block them. And if they’re truly being hateful, report them.
Anything else I should know?
Sure. There are lots of other tools for making Tumblr the Tumblr you want to see. You can read about them all in our help center.

iPhone and Android updates are ready to download!
In our continued quest to make your mobile Tumblr experience sick as hell, we’ve updated our iOS and Android apps with a host of fixes, features, and improvements. Notable new things include:
The apps (and updates) are available in the App Store or Google Play. Enjoy!
There’s a brand new way to post pictures, videos, and Loops you make with the Tumblr camera. We made some tweaks to the existing camera features and even added a few new creative tools. The best part? It’s easier than ever to get there. All you have to do is swipe right on your dashboard while you’re in the app. We’ve conferred with the leading experts in science, math, and fingers and they all agreed this makes it 1250% times faster to get to the camera. Nearly unbelievable.
Upon swiping right, you’ll see a familiar button at the top of your screen that says “Normal.” There are three different modes to nab your content, and you can switch between them by tapping that button. “Normal” takes pictures and videos, “Stitch” allows you to take and string together a series of pictures or videos in one video file, and “Loop” creates a moving image that plays backward and forward in a, well, you know…a loop.
Some of the fun stuff that already existed just got a little facelift, some of it is brand new, and all of it is in your app right now (as long as you’re running version 15.4 or later of the Tumblr app).
Questions? Head on over to our Help Center for those sweet, sweet answers. As always, we’re still tweaking and finessing behind the scenes. There’s more to come for this creative canvas. Keep your eyes peeled for more creative tools to help you, ya know, create. We just wanted to get this quick update out to you as soon as possible. Play around with it and let us know what you think. We always keep our eyes on the notes of these feature update posts. If you make something you’re proud of, post your creation with the tag #TumblrCreates. We’ll promote the best of the best on Tumblr or our social media.
Push notifications for Android!
You pushed for it. It’s happened. Today’s Android update features push notifications, along with a newly-designed activity screen. Now you can get updates whenever someone follows your blog or interacts with your posts.
Because you’re so cool, your phone might start blowing up with notifications. To control which ones you see, go to the Account tab and tap Settings.
iOS coming very soon!
