  • Advancing Science for Pet Health The extensive resources PURINA has devoted to research have led to ground-breaking studies and nutritional breakthroughs over the decades that improve the lives of pets and in some cases, may even extend their lives. These include a 14-year life-span study in dogs, which proved the importance of keeping dogs in lean body condition from puppyhood and throughout their lives. • World Environment Day gives us an opportunity to reflect on our sustainability goals. Did you know that the PURINA Blayney factory in NSW has transitioned to 100% renewable electricity. The Blayney factory produces some of Australia's most popular pet food brands, including PURINA ONE, FELIX, and SUPERCOAT. The switch to renewable energy was made possible through a 10-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Squadron Energy, which will generate electricity from the Crudine Ridge and Sapphire wind farms in NSW and will cover the electricity across the site. • Caring for Older Dogs As your beloved canine companion ages, it's important to ensure that their later years are filled with joy and good health. With regular veterinary care, daily attention, and proper nutrition, your senior dog can experience a rewarding and fulfilling life. Determining your dog's age can be challenging, especially if you haven't had them since they were puppies. Factors such as breed, lifestyle, diet, exercise, and medical history all play a role in their lifespan. Generally, smaller breeds tend to live longer than larger breeds, with larger dogs often considered "old" at around seven years of age. Exercise remains vital for your senior dog's well-being, but it's important to tailor it to their capabilities. Obesity and arthritis are common concerns in older dogs, so consult your vet before starting or modifying an exercise program. Dental care is also important, as older dogs are more susceptible to gum disease and tartar buildup. Emotional support and understanding the psychological changes your dog may be experiencing are crucial during their senior years. Understanding your senior dog's changing nutritional needs is paramount. As dogs reach the age of seven and beyond, they become less active with a slower metabolism, requiring fewer calories. However, high-quality, easily digestible protein becomes even more important to maintain overall body condition. A good senior diet should provide concentrated, low-fat protein, easily digestible carbohydrates for energy, key minerals to support aging joints, and vitamins that help bolster the immune system. We hope these tips help your canine companion in those later years of life

  • Training is an important part of any dog's life, providing mental and physical exercise while enhancing the bond with your furry companion. When training your dog, it's crucial to use reward-based training, also known as positive reinforcement, which involves rewarding good behaviour. Reward training is highly effective and positive for dogs. Rewards can come in various forms, such as tasty treats, chin tickles, or verbal praise. Dogs work for outcomes, so if a behaviour is repeated, it must be reinforced somehow. Consistency is key! Understanding your dog and what is normal for them is essential for effective training. Dogs are eager to please, so if they aren't following commands, it may be due to unclear communication. Using the right reinforcement, cues, commands, and body language is crucial for successful training. Lastly, keep training sessions short and end them on a positive note. Happy Training!

  • We all know that water is the most important and essential nutrient for maintaining life..... But did you know that cats can obtain a certain amount of water from the food they eat and by producing it within the body. But mostly, cats obtain water by drinking. So how can we encourage our furry friends to drink more water? Cats are often very specific about how their water is supplied and will often have individual preferences for the type of bowl (ceramic, plastic, stainless steel), the bowl's location, the type of water (tap or bottled), and how it is presented. This is why it is essential to provide clean, fresh water at all times, preferably in several locations around the house. Some cats also have difficulty seeing still water or prefer their water to be moving. This is why cats often drink from taps, ponds, puddles, and use their paws to move the water around before drinking it. If you find that your cat prefers this way of drinking, consider supplying their water in a cat drinking fountain. Hope you find these tips handy!
