Luna is a talking black-purple cat that advises and mentors Usagi Tsukino (Sailor Moon) and the rest of the Sailor Senshi throughout the anime series. This is the first anime depiction of the original manga character. Her counterpart is Artemis, who assists Sailor Venus.

Appearance[]

Luna has short black-purple fur, deep garnet red eyes, black whiskers, a pink nose, pink inner ears and her signature upturned yellow crescent moon displayed on her forehead.

Personality[]

Luna is very dedicated to the mission of the Sailor Senshi, always reminding them of the importance of their duties. She is particularly stern towards Usagi, who she had hoped would mature and progress the fastest. However, this is only because she wants the best for Usagi, even if she is unable to express it.

Luna usually has a serious disposition and always encourages the girls to be mindful of what they need to do. However, she can lighten up at times, and has shown somewhat of a silly side, sometimes letting the girls do their own thing and occasionally getting involved in some way. She teases Usagi from time to time as well.

Luna is also a romantic, and hopes to find love, curling up with Artemis the odd time, or falling in love during some storylines.

Luna can also be somewhat quick to judge others (like when she mistook Ami for a Youma upon their first meeting) and can also be quite cold, taking a while to warm up to others.

Powers and Abilities[]

Luna has the ability to perform a high-jump turning into a mid-air front tuck to summon items for the Sailor Senshi (such as their Transformation Pens, Ami's supercomputer, and Usagi's Disguise Pen, as well as the Moon Stick.) Luna also has the ability to speak, which she must frequently hide to assume the identity of a normal cat. Luna is also very agile, able to jump quite high even when not summoning items, and can use her claws to scratch enemies and cause damage, although this is usually minimal.

Luna is also able to reawaken the Sailor Senshi's powers and, in doing so, her crescent moon will glow, something which she demonstrated in Sailor Moon R. Her crescent moon glowed again when Princess Serenity awakened, which was an indication of the return of her memories of her past life.

Luna also appears to have heightened senses when it comes to detecting evil energy. She seems to be able to detect when a monster or enemy is nearby (such as with various monsters of the day), and will occasionally shiver or become tense when she senses one. She usually tries to alert Usagi to these, who is usually oblivious.

Biography[]

In the future, it can be assumed she marries Artemis, and they have Diana. Sailor Mercury also recreates Luna's likeness in the form of Luna-P.

Sailor Moon[]

Luna lived on the moon with Artemis as advisors to Queen Serenity at the palace in the Moon Kingdom. One day, the forces of the Dark Kingdom, lead by Queen Beryl and Queen Metalia, invaded the kingdom. Luna and Artemis spread the word. Later, after seeing Princess Serenity and Prince Endymion die from a blast from Queen Metalia, Luna cried. Despite her plea not to use the crystal sacrifice herself to defeat the Dark Kingdom, the Queen does so and resurrects her daughter and everyone else. Later, the Queen sends her daughter, the Earth Prince, the four princesses of Mercury, Mars, Jupiter and Venus, and the entire court to be reincarnated on Earth in the future. Before dying and sending them to Earth in suspended animation, the Queen instructs Luna and Artemis to find the princesses so that they can become the future Sailor Senshi. At some point upon their arrival on Earth, Luna and Artemis split up so they can find the princesses faster. Luna was saved by Usagi, who was the reincarnation of Princess Serenity, when some boys were picking on her. Usagi noticed the bandage on her forehead. When she took it off, it revealed the upturned crescent moon birthmark. Later, at her home in her room, Usagi discovered Luna standing there. She introduced herself to her and told her about her destiny as a future hero.

Throughout the season, Luna assists Usagi in finding and awakening the remaining four Sailor Senshi as well as the Moon Princess. Luna helps awaken Ami Mizuno, Rei Hino, and Makoto Kino as Sailor Senshi by granting them Transformation Pens. She also grants Ami her supercomputer as well as the Disguise Pen to Usagi.

Luna also communicates to a mysterious figure through the Sailor V arcade game (later revealed to be Artemis), who she converses with to find out information about the Dark Kingdom.

Near the end of the season, she and Artemis locate the Dark Kingdom's hideout in D Point, but sustain injuries from Kunzite and are unable to join the Senshi. During the final battle, Luna begs Usagi to not release the power of the Silver Crystal or she will die. After the final battle, she hopes that the Sailor Senshi will be able to meet and befriend each other once again, having lost their memories.

Sailor Moon R[]

Luna is forced to reawaken the Sailor Senshi after Ail and An begin draining energy. She also tries to save Usagi after a Cardian destroys her brooch, and they end up in a void, where Usagi apologizes for always putting Luna in danger.

Sailor Moon S[]

Luna worries for Usagi after her transformation device is destroyed.

Sailor Moon SuperS[]

After meeting Diana, Luna and the other Sailor Senshi suspect Artemis of flirting with a nun, having Diana with her. However, they eventually learn the truth that Diana is the future daughter of herself and Artemis, in similar vein to Chibiusa.

Trivia[]

  • Luna can access the Sailor V game with the password "The rabbit on the moon pounds mochi", which is a play on Usagi's name and a reference to the legend associated with it.
    • Luna's code name was 0091, which could be a play on her name spelled backwards.
  • In both the DiC and Cloverway dubs, Luna talked with a British (and rather middle-aged) accent. In the Viz dub, however, she was given a regular, youthful voice. However, Luna is only a year younger than the Sailor Senshi, being 13.
  • Her Japanese voice actress, Keiko Han, also voiced Queen Beryl. Keiko Han also voiced Luna in the live-action TV series.
