New Zealanders toss away more than a billion plastic bottles every year. Our throw-away bottles end up clogging our landfills, getting shipped offshore and incinerated in places like Malaysia (harming human health), or on our coast, causing harm to wildlife and breaking down into tiny toxic pieces which end up in our food, our bellies, our bloodstreams and (according to research I heard last week) our brains. We all have a choice to carry refillable drink bottles, choose bottle-free products like Ethique and use refilleries instead of buying detergents and other household products in single use bottles. And, we can get the problem sorted faster, and for good, with a ban on throwaway plastic bottles and a mandate for reusable alternatives. We did it for plastic bags so we can do it for bottles too. That's why I'm all for this petition: https://lnkd.in/gZQffpA3 The proposed scope of this ban is for ‘ready-to-drink’, single-use plastic beverage containers in the volume range of 0.1 litres to 3 litres (e.g. mineral water, soft drinks, sport drinks, juices, and milks). It would be a great start.
