As the pandemic accelerated the closure of third places and exacerbated the loneliness epidemic, one’s yearning for human connection intensified, showing up in obsessive forms of behaviour. DATA According to a survey by Business Insider in partnership with YouGov, 29% of Gen Z said technology and social media have made them either somewhat or much more lonely – the highest of any generation. LEVERAGE THE TREND (1) Create opportunities for your community to form a sense of connection through personalised online platforms such as podcasts and long-form content, or IRL meet ups such as pop-up events and localised product drops. Dutch brand and digital design studio - and Dutch Digital Design partner agency - WONDERLAND collaborated with Free Press Unlimited and 180 Global to create this eye-opening and thought-provoking website: the Erased font. Raising awareness for the decline in press freedom - highlighting the growing number of imprisoned journalists across the world. The user interacts with a customised element that brings the Erased font - a custom font created by 180 Global - to life. Enabling users to observe complete words slowly getting wiped out. Showing what happens to the actual words and stories written by journalists. Our Dutch Digital Design curators were captivated: 'Love the concept. Simple yet so impactful.
