New California Republic Radio 440 (NCRR440), also known as New California Republic Radio (NCRPR) or Radio Free NCR,[1] is a publicly-funded AM radio station, hosted by Roger Moore, that broadcasts current events in the Republic and music for citizens of the NCR.

Background[]

NCRPR is part of the NCR's Public Network Restoration Project, an NCR program to restore and expand pre-war communication systems, along with its sister television network NCRBS and internet service NCR Online. Hosted by Roger Moore from a studio in the Angel's Boneyard, it serves as an (at least outwardly) objective source of current events, weather reports, and entertainment for citizens of the Republic. While strongly biased toward NCR interests, the station could not outright considered a source of propaganda in the manner of its rival station, DETH 98.1, as due to its status as a member of the "free" NCR press it commonly reports on sensitive issues without the approval of NCR military or political interest. However, the station is not above occasionally hosting biased or false news segments at the interests of those who pay its funding.

The station's tracks consist primarily of Cold War-themed folk, pop, and rock music from the 1940s through the 1960s, from holotapes and records recovered from regions such as the ruins of Santa Monica or car wrecks along Interstate 10.

Broadcast segments[]

Intros[]

  • "You're listening to New California Republic Radio."
  • "That was a tune we recovered from an old car along I-10, in holotape format."
  • "And now for the news..."

Stories[]

Prequel
  • "An undercover report on the Brotherhood of Steel was made public today. According to the paper, the terrorist faction has been driven out of California, and a large contingent of the Brotherhood is headed east into the wilds of America. All contact has been lost with their leadership. Military officials tell that the report is proof that the faction has been defeated, and the NCR is free to move on to the next enemy."
  • "The latest reports from I-15 report a truce has been officially signed with the raider faction known as the Survivalists in the San Bernardino Cajon Pass. Their defeat in Union City several years ago was attributed to NCR intervention in a slave revolt and severely weakened the expansive network of raiders which infest the mountains north of the I-15 beltway. Colonel Bill Silverman was promoted to brigadier general for his efforts in the accord, and now rallies troops to reinforce their battered position. This hour of music is sponsored by the Gun Runners: When you need guns, we run. To you. And that's it for the news hour. We'll be back with more information in the next half hour with reports from across the nation. I've been your host, Roger Moore, and you're listening to NCRPR."
  • "In San Francisco today, a Shi businessman reported earnings in excess of 2 million NCR dollars, making him the richest man in the Republic. Che Bo Kin, owner of the mercenary organization Nova Star, said that his life's wealth would be used to uplift the masses and put enemies of the Republic underground. NCR engineers in the San Fernando Valley have reported that we have internet access running in eighteen percent of the California wasteland. The Public Network Restoration Project has been running for the past twenty-five years at a cost of 8 million NCR dollars. Senator DuVille has called the great expense a gross misuse of taxpayer money and military resources. And that's it for the news hour. I've been your host, Roger Moore, and you're listening to NCRPR."
Chapter 1
  • "Scouting parties in the far northern territory report that they’ve made contact with an undiscovered pre-war town untouched by the Great War. Nestled into the mountains of Washington, the town has a supply of fresh water and is surrounded by green pines. And all indications are, it's paradise."
  • "This just in. Sightings of a massive explosion in the San Bernardino mountains were reported today, followed by a rising cloud of smoke that blotted out the sun. Initial analysis indicates a reactor cookoff, sending clouds of radiation drifting over the sand dunes along I-10 south of the mountains. Experts were quick to point out, the event could give the tense situation with the Survivalists an excuse to become critical."
  • "Terror Max has launched a renewed offensive against NCR forces in Marina Del Rey. The raider leader has called for an open war against our forces staged in the Dune Sea. His pirate radio station, DETH 98.1, recently claimed responsibility for the taking of twenty civilian hostages in the Boneyard's north. Territorial Command reinforces their stance that raider activity is at an all time low and they will soon deal with the criminals."
Chapter 2
  • "A census report was published this week, indicating that the population of New California has reached a number greater than 1 million. Recent papers released by the University of New California indicate that the healthy humans make up the majority while ghouls and super mutant populations continue to rapidly decline."
  • "Archaeological digs in the recently-found village of Arroyo point to the disappearance of the legendary home of the "Chosen One" to be attributed to the Enclave invasion. Theory has long held that the tribe originated in the far south with the Vault Dweller myth leading to the foundation of the NCR. The extinct tribe's origins were reportedly in the far north, where the ruins of the Enclave's massive superbase were destroyed in the war forty years ago."
  • "General Aaron Kimball has reported a sighting of the Great Khans in a place called Bullhead City. Military action was called for, as their recent rise in power follows the defeat of Mogul Genghis, whose defeat unified the desperate Khan tribes against the NCR. Success in the far-off territory of Arizona would help further unite the NCR's power as it expands eastward. The last known holdouts in New California Republic territory, the Survivalists in San Bernardino, would be the only remaining faction left outside NCR control from Los Angeles to Two Sun. Skies are clear from the Mexican south up to the ruins of Oregon. The Los Angeles Boneyards can expect another ash storm from the mysterious fires burning in the Santa Monica ruins with no clear ending in sight. We're partly cloudy over the San Bernardino Valley, with a slight chance of dust storms later this evening. Always remember to check your skyline for approaching dust storms every half hour. If you see objects on the horizon line start to disappear, head for cover immediately."
Bridge Over I-15/Join The War Machine
  • "An NCR military expedition was attacked on I-15 today, on their way towards the legendary Hoover Dam. President Wendell has assured Congress that the time to strike at the last holdouts in California is now. He pointed to the previous administration, warning that pussyfooting with raiders is not the right thing to do. Rumors in the private sector of a mercenary solution are beginning to arise, pointing to a possible deal with NCR military to provide relief on the newly-opened warfront within Californian territory."
Chapter 3
  • "Congress is warning of massive economic backlashes and a nationwide financial crisis following the wake of the renewed war with the Survivalists. Experts agree that the only solution to the debt crisis would be a full-scale invasion of the northern Mojave, and a reclamation of powerful economic resources rumored to lay vacant in the desert along I-15. However, any mission to scout the desert would presently lead through the now war-ravaged San Bernardino Valley, leaving any such solution up to the outcome of the upcoming battle to eliminate the Survivalists once and for all. This hour of music is brought to you by the Mojave Express: In rain, sunshine, or firestorms, we're here to serve you with all your parcel trafficking needs."
  • "An all-out war with the Survivalists in San Bernardino is now underway. Reports are coming in telling of massive gunfights rolling across the stretch of I-15 from southern Nevada all the way to the sand dunes of the 'dino Valley. New Reno gang bosses and Los Angeles raider factions are all hailing the events in the Cajon Pass as victory for the separatists. The war is inspiring their leadership to rise up and strike at the NCR. Multiple corporate interests with ties to operations in Union City are threatening to withdraw support for the NCR military if their defense is not ensured within a week. What started as a mundane skirmish with the powerful Survivalist faction has turned into a linchpin situation that threatens to destabilize the entire Republic."

Outros[]

  • "In the next half-hour, we'll have the latest news from around California, from Shady Sands, to the far north. Until then, you're listening to New California Republic Radio."
  • "Next up on NCRPR, we have a new track recovered from the ruins of downtown Santa Monica. Remember, if you happen to find any old records or holotapes out there on your scavenging runs, feel free to bring them into the studio."

Behind the scenes[]

  • NCRPR and the broadcast style of its host Roger Moore are based on the American publicly-funded radio station National Public Radio (NPR).
  • Moore's segment referencing an "undiscovered pre-war town" in northern Washington may allude to Fallout Cascadia, a total overhaul mod for Fallout 4.
  • NCRR440 is referenced in the 2024 Fallout TV Show by an official upload by Amazon Prime showcasing the TV show's official soundtrack, as seen in this video. The creators of the Fallout: New California mod and the NCRR440 soundtrack composer, Martin Purvis, have noticed this and made joking statements about how the mod is now canon.
