Emily Wurramara: Through the Portals

“We have always been storytellers, and through our art we continue the legacy of our ancestors,” Emily Wurramara tells Apple Music. In honour of NAIDOC Week 2024, the Warnindhilyagwa singer-songwriter used the concept of portals to inspire this playlist. “One thing these artists all have in common is transporting people through their own portals,” she says. “This is their truth that has echoed from generation to generation. The fire will always burn, even long after we’re gone.”Below, Wurramara breaks down five of the tracks that mean the most to her. DENNI, “Know My Worth” “I love DENNI. Her lyricism is quick and she’s feisty in this song. There’s an energy with this that makes me wanna run amok. Get around it, get down to it: Sissy DENNI is out here preaching straight hard facts. ‘Know My Worth’ is a powerful reminder to never settle for less. We deserve it all and are so worthy of it.” Troy Cassar-Daley, “Windradyne” “Uncle Troy is an icon when it comes to truth-telling. This song echoes truth and a heavy story. I encourage those to look deeper and feel his lyrics. Uncle Troy has always been so magical with weaving words and painting a story. ‘Windradyne’ is powerful.” King Stingray, “Through the Trees” “They will always be a timeless band for me. Anything they release echoes spirits and makes my soul wanna get up and dance. This is a true appreciation song for Country, which is at the epitome of every philosophy when it comes to First Nations persons globally. The land will always keep us grounded and ‘Through the Trees’ makes me homesick.” Barkaa, “We Up” “This song is an anthem for women. It’s taking back that power and being unapologetic, which is what Sissy Barkaa is all about. This is a celebration of the tiddas [and] a reminder how we are invincible. We can accomplish anything we want and we definitely do not need to ask anyone for permission to shine.” Budjerah, “Missing You” “Budjerah is insane. His vocals are so smooth. This track makes me feel like writing love letters to my man. Blak love and Blak joy is just as powerful, staunch and vulnerable. Budjerah embodies this energy so beautifully and his music is a testament to that love.” The artwork on this playlist was created in collaboration with Noongar artist Janelle Burger. Apple acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of country throughout Australia and their continuing connection to land, culture and community. We pay our respects to Elders past and present.
