Barkaa: Blak Magik

“It’s OK to big-note yourself,” Barkaa, aka Chloe Quayle, tells Apple Music. “Be loud and proud and never be ashamed of who you are and what made you who you are today.” Quayle is no stranger to celebrating Blak strength—especially strong Blak women—in her music. The outspoken rapper’s 2021 debut album and its anthemic title track “Blak Matriarchy” did just that, and her 2024 single “We Up” proudly followed suit. The Malyangapa and Barkindji woman brings that sense of solidarity and resilience to her NAIDOC Week playlist. “This is a short glimpse of the soundtracks that are paving the way now and have paved the way for me as a Blak woman in this country,” says Quayle. “It’s a reminder to stay staunch but also stay accountable. I hope listeners will feel a sense of pride and purpose listening to these tracks, and be able to tap into their emotions. Something you can smile to, dance to, get angry to and cry to.” Read on for more about three key tracks on the playlist. Archie Roach, “Walking Into Doors” “This is a reminder to protect Blak women, and that domestic violence and abuse has no place in our culture.” Miss Kaninna, “Blak Britney” “Another song I want to highlight about Blak women empowerment and that staunch Blak woman energy. Miss Kannina has captured that beautifully. This helps me get moving and reminds me of how deadly and powerful I am—that I’m that tidda. That our women are the be-all and end-all and a big fuck you to the system.” Kobie Dee, “Warriors & Storytellers” “This has been making me feel like I’m boss, that I’ve broken cycles, that trauma ran in my family until me. That the past doesn’t define who we are but makes us and paves us to the place we’re meant to be. That nothing is impossible and a reminder that we don’t need others’ tables; we can create our own legacies and our own tables.” The artwork on this playlist was created in collaboration with Noongar artist Janelle Burger. Apple acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of country throughout Australia and their continuing connection to land, culture and community. We pay our respects to Elders past and present.
