Monday’s Modern Asheville Home

Wilson Architect’s Cool Crafted Nest in Kenilworth | This past week we met up with architects Aaron and Calder Wilson to see their latest project nearing completion. The 2700 sqft, 3 bedroom, Kenilworth home was designed for an artistic client relocating to Asheville. The requirements were a simple construction that was clean, low maintenance and designed to have an intimate relationship with the trees on the property. FrontThe exterior of the home remains minimal in expression. A composition of boxes express volumes of living spaces while entries are carved out both transitioning and giving clues to the interior beyond.

Upon entry your eyes are immediately drawn to the towering living room windows that frame nature much like Mondrian would have done. Past that the layered interior unfolds like a stage set.Dunkirk Comp Entry The open master bedroom loft suspends over the clean, modern kitchen supported by rhythmic steel and wood. Further beyond an industrial garage door opens to the exterior bringing nature into the owner’s work space. The simple, yet rich, interior blends three materials: steel, white walls and wood harvested from the property; both maple for cabinets and oak for flooring.

The master suite loft is accessed by floating wood stairs on steel to keep the home open and flowing. Likewise, the modern spa-like master bath is anchored by a bathtub that was required to be floating in the trees for the owner. Dunkirk Master Comp

Bob Callahan of BuiltSmart builders crafted the home with his team. Bob, who builds only one home per year, was a key partner in flushing out details and enhancing the design of the home. The building envelope was framed with 8″ SIPs panels making it super insulated. Bob states the home will have a Hers Score of 55 when completed given the overall efficiency. This means the home will be almost 50% more efficient than others in the US.Wilsons

Overall, the home’s simple appearance masks the sophisticated design thought behind the construction which is one of the cool aspects of modern design. The Wilson’s, who helped steward HGTV’s Urban Oasis into reality, have mindfully molded a light stage for living freely while creating and having a daily conversation with the trees. What else could one ask for from a modern nest in Asheville? Cheers to Calder and Aaron!

Samsel’s Modern Pavilion House Update

On our past visit to Samsel Architects, architect Duncan McPherson walked us through the design of this clean and simple house. We love this one! Below you can see the progression. Samsel Sketch

“The Pavilion House is located on a 40-acre farm that has remarkable mountain views and land dotted with towering old growth oak trees. It was important to locate and organize the house so the owners would get spectacular views without compromising the health of the large oak trees on the property. The result is an “L” shaped house designed around the trees with plenty of windows to connect the indoor living space to the outdoors. Construction has begun and framing, roof and windows are complete. Samsel Architects is working with Fred and Seth Koon of Koon Custom Homes to bring the modern home to completion.”Construction

Asheville Architect’s Summer Social

CatawbaKelly and I stopped by the American Institute of Architect’s summer social last evening at Catawba Brewery’s newest location on the south slope of downtown. Modern Asheville Real Estate is a sponsor of our local chapter. Our friends Myles Alexander of Form and Function Architecture and Thad Rhoden of Sparc Design provided the expert BBQ Pork and AIA’s lovely Mary Fierle provided homemade spicy pickles. {YUM!} We, also, got to hear about some great projects coming up and a modern home soon to come on the market. For more on our local AIA organization go here. Cheers!

Designer Spotlight | TWO Wilson Architects

Kelly and I sat down with Aaron and Calder Wilson this week to catch up on all the projects they are involved with. We see their name pop up frequently around town designing everything from new historic style to modern homes and, also, renovations. Two homes they helped design are currently on the real estate market. One, is our listing at 215 Victoria Way in Waynesville. The other is a one level, modern home in central Asheville.Wilson 02

While we love some of the new built homes they are working on we are particularly drawn to the vision they bring for renovations. They seem gifted a creating more open and functional spaces while both simplifying and enriching the architecture. We hope to tour one of their projects next week. Wilson Comp 01

We love the articulation of the I-Beams contrasting cool steel with warm woods while exposing the simple structural components that happen to outline the quintessential symbol of house throughout the upper floor.
