Covet | Industrial Modern

1617667_257960871053152_367977811_oThere is nothing I like more than mid-century relics with a patina of rust or layers of paint. Items from the industrial 20th century seem to get my attention. Perhaps it’s a more manly or utilitarian version of modern. Delicate furnishings don’t last well in my domain. Industrial strength is a requirement. Thus, you find I store my t-shirts in old military filing cabinets and my kitchen cutting board sits atop a repurposed, 5o’s school projector cart.Covet

It is a popular style here and there are many places one can find it in Asheville. One of those is Covet’s booth at the Screen Door. From old lockers, manufacturing cabinets, laboratory equipment and old signage they have it covered. If you would like to keep up with their inventory stop by in person or like Covet’s Facebook page here. Have a great weekend. Cheers!1978527_257960377719868_940472229_o-1

Splurge | Upcycled Goods and Furnishings

IMG_2303We recently stopped by to catch up with Robert Nicholas, Asheville’s King of Upcycling. We always enjoy a stroll through his shop. Robert has a distinctive eye for picking vintage objects and crafting light fixtures that defy conventional scale and textures. The same keen eye curates the shops collection of curiosities that creates a sense of discovery and fun for guests. No doubt — he is the master of his domain! So, stop by 37 Paynes Way soon and enjoy the adventure. Cheers!Splurge Comp

Kelly and our newest team member, Matt Allen, will be there to answer all your real estate needs between finding cool mid-century furnishings, rustic relics and artful constructions. Cheers!

Retro Pendant Lights at Stuff Antiques

IMG_0367I made a quick stop downtown while showing one of our condo listings to Stuff Antiques. We have another client looking for some vintage fixtures so I thought I would be helpful and check their current inventory to pass along. I spotted this row of retro fixtures. Stop by 52 Broadway if interested. They also do great lamp repairs. Cheers! Troy

A Few of My Favorite Things @ SPLURGE

Splurge CompKelly and I stopped down to visit with Robert today at SPLURGE to discuss some potential ventures within the creative community. He was busy making various custom light fixtures for a client. I can never resist poking around his gallery of artful curiosities. Above are a few of my favorites. Cheers!

Eldorado Mid-Century Salvage | New Years Sale

Eldorado CompAfter running into Christi and Simon of Eldorado Mid-Century Salvage at Sue and Lance’s retro party last week I wanted to stop in and check out their current inventory. I quickly noticed a space age sofa, a dozen lamps and some Bertoia wire chairs. Also, their booth had signs for 20% off. Be sure to stop by and find them at the Antique Tobacco Barn soon. Cheers!IMG_6654

Atomic Furnishings + Design | Grand Opening

IMG_0373I stopped by to visit with Hannah, Megan and Todd yesterday as they put the finishing touches on their new showroom, Atomic Furnishing & Design. Their mid-century furnishings shop will open this Saturday the 16th. The doors open at noon, but the festivities are between 5 and 8pm. Kelly, Chett and myself {the other Mod Squad} will no doubt be crashing it.

Todd and Megan combined forces having both been individual pickers of mid-century modern. Megan is an interior designer and Todd a carpenter and furniture restorer. Hannah, a Doula, brought her caring sense, natural style and handiwork skills in refinishing and upholstery. The trio combined and originally opened a booth in Screen Door, but success led them seeking wider spaces. They are now in Woodfin at 115 Elk Mountain. IMG_0374Stop by this Saturday for their debut and chat them up about their Paul McCobb chairs or their interior design. See you there! Troy

Splurge | In Search of the Big “O”

Big OFollowing a tour of Bert King’s mid-century addition at Asheville High School I stopped in to visit Robert at Splurge. It was a long, cold winter and the rumor was he had just what I needed — a big O — in neon. As if one wasn’t enough he has a dozen more set to hit the gallery tomorrow. Better get in line! Robert is Asheville’s King of Upcylcing and he is the guy many folks look to for artful additions and rustic theatrics to their interiors. He is consulting and adding his vision to several downtown restaurants today.

Wanting more? Click here or stop by his gallery behind the Wedge studios in the River Arts District. Tell him Troy sent you!

Tarleton of Oddfellows

TarletonI stopped in to visit Tarleton at Oddfellow Antiques today. She has assisted me in downsizing on several occasions so I wanted to help her in her own retail downsizing. She is condensing her booths and has all non-sale items marked down 30% and all sale items an additional 10%. Stop by this beautiful Asheville weekend and pick up something to take back to your very own Brady house. Cheers! Troy

Vintage Modern 06: Local Antiques

Today, I stopped off to visit Morgan and Chad Baker at their shop called Local Antiques while looking for some vintage planters for our new office. I didn’t find what I was looking for, however, I did see a great variety of mid-century furnishings there. I make it one of my regular stops on the weekends.Local Comp

Neighboring Local Antiques are other shops including Nostalgique and Oddfellows Antiques {say hi to Tarleton}. All these are down Swannanoa River Rd from the Tobacco Barn. Then from there you can hit the Biltmore Village area and see Chris at Revive, Chris at Dwellings and then swing up FairviewRd to visit MIX and the Screen Door. Last, circle back to Sweeten Creek and head east to Sweeten Creek antiques where you will find a few mid-century booths. You might catch Jeff rearranging some Eames era ceramics there. Together, the ten or so stores in the area can make for a full afternoon {or day} of home furnishing hunting and not a bad way, if you are like me, to avoid the Super Bowl.

For more on Local Antiques visit their Facebook page.

MIX Vintage

Thanks to a Modern Asheville fan, Janice, I recently discovered MIX Modern in Biltmore Village. I stopped by yesterday and met the owner, Michelle, who has pulled together a well curated collection of mixed up vintage styles from Asian to Mid-Century to Industrial.

My eye was particular caught by the Knoll Credenza and the brutalist lamp by Paul Evans. From now on I will be stopping to check on her inventory on my way to the Screen Door. To see more of MIX’s current inventory click here. Enjoy!
