I came across this cool sketch by architect Henry Gaines last night while scanning the NC Collection at Pack Library. The concept was drawn up in December of 1947. The moderne style home was to be located in Morganton. If anyone has any further information on it we would love to know. Cheers!

Kelly and I sat down with Aaron and Calder Wilson this week to catch up on all the projects they are involved with. We see their name pop up frequently around town designing everything from new historic style to modern homes and, also, renovations. Two homes they helped design are currently on the real estate market. One, is our listing at 215 Victoria Way in Waynesville. The other is a one level, modern home in central Asheville.
While we love some of the new built homes they are working on we are particularly drawn to the vision they bring for renovations. They seem gifted a creating more open and functional spaces while both simplifying and enriching the architecture. We hope to tour one of their projects next week.

Kelly and I enjoy seeing what can be done with historic homes to create light and clean interiors. This new home designed and built from ground up had to fit into the historic neighborhood of Montford which has significant guidelines on the exterior for maintaining context. However, there were no guidelines for the interior allowing them to design a more modern, but still warm, interior. We love it! Want to see a bit more? Click here. Cheers! Kelly and Troy

Yesterday, Kelly and I had to stop and admire the details, not previously shown, of the unique home we have co-listed with broker Diane Vander Linden. The main house has walls, floors and decks of poured concrete with walls faced in rock. The house was constructed in 1946 by a structural engineer who built 
bomb shelters. There are approximately 1600 square feet of covered cantilevered decks supported by 7″ x 12″ steel beams and beautifully chambered rails of formed concrete that are soft to the touch. All of this firmly and gently perched along the cascading trout stream. Imagine a Burnsville’s “Public Works” style version of Falling Waters or a mini version of the Asheville Civic Center. Enjoy!
Kelly and I took a tour of the remodeled Ora Street Baptist Church near downtown that has been retrofitted to be a 3 bedroom residence. Overall, it is a clean and clever reuse project that would be easy to live in. The main living space was open with great light and views to Bueacatcher mountain through the former alter window. The master bedroom was loft style to overlook the main floor. The detail we were particularly smitten with was the sunken, baptismal style shower. Amen!
