About

ModernAsheville.com began as a simple hobby derived from a passion for both telling stories and design simplicity. The goal is to make design approachable and accessible to all people and show the difference it can make in your life. Being a bit varied as people, you’ll find we cover everything from the comforts of mid-century kitsch to important environmental impacts on building today. And today we bring in Modern Asheville Real Estate with my business partner Kelly Erin-Spinney. All these things and more make up the story and community that is Modern Asheville. Cheers! Troy

About Troy {Publisher}

Troy Headshot 4x6Perhaps Troy was destined to love everything modern. He grew up in the small town of Columbus, Indiana, with claims to fame that include: one of the ten most architecturally beautiful towns in the US, home to one of the largest collections of modern architecture and ranked 6th in the US for architectural innovation and design from the American Institute of Architects.

After leaving Columbus, Troy earned a degree in Architecture from the University of Cincinnati.  He moved to Los Angeles and began his career as a designer in the entertainment industry.  While in California, Troy was creative director at Walt Disney Imagineering, Sony Entertainment, Universal Creative and Hallmark Cards.  He spent this part of his career working with contemporary designers, artists and illustrators.  It was in the LA neighborhoods of the San Fernando Valley where Troy discovered how much he was drawn to and fascinated by contemporary ranches.

Troy moved up the coast and away from the corporate environment, to Astoria, Oregon.  There he owned and operated a successful modern art gallery and retail store, called Lunar Boy Gallery.  He was able to showcase the fine modern work of colleagues he worked with in LA and Kansas City.  He also lived in and remodeled a 1960’s contemporary overlooking the Columbia River.

Seeking a change of scenery and less rain, Troy moved to Asheville in 2006, but before he would unpack his boxes, he was scouring the neighborhoods to uncover the modern gems.  And he was surprised to discover that among the predominant display of Arts & Crafts bungalows and turn-of-the century gothic relief, this small mountain town had modern tucked away in every corner.  Civic Tall“Almost everyday I walk by the Asheville Civic Center building.  Most people balk at it and think it is completely out of place but I love it, says Troy. “The concrete cantilevers hanging over those large scale natural rocks topped by rhythmic glass walls.  It is dynamic to me.”

But Troy is not alone.  There is a community of people, from every walk of life, that love clean, modern design.  With that encouragement this blog is created to bring those lovers and practitioners of modern together under one umbrella and offer them a place to come out and play – mixing simplicity with clean lines while building sustainable lifestyles.  It is a way of looking at Asheville through Troy’s eyes but also a place for others to share their vision and their modern perspective.

    Hello Troy, I really enjoy the blog alerts we get each week. Modern/Vintage is definitely our style. I wanted to let you know of a business in Asheville we just discovered: Mix Vintage @ 101 Fairview Road ( same shopping center as French Broad Brewery ) near Biltmore Village. Michele has very unique modern/vintage pieces which would fit in any of the homes you showcase on your blog. We are in the process of purchasing a Michael Cole piece for our home . She also showcases local artist work .. If you haven’t been there , you should check this place out .. 828 407 1002
