I, too, have been using an OpenID provider for backup -- partly in case I were to ever lose access to my primary credential (not that I think that's likely, but best to be safe) and partly because a previous workplace blocked Google (!). But for all the maintenance burden it's causing, I can instead add an email sign-in as backup.

Here too - I've maintained my own openID specifically for stackexchange, though I do use other services to log in regularly now.
