Apple has issued two software updates for its AirTag item trackers since November, although the company did not disclose what had changed at the time. This week, Apple finally updated a support manual to describe the new features.

Precision Finding

Apple claims that software update 2.0.24 enables AirTag customers to use Precision Finding on their iPhones to locate unfamiliar AirTags.

2.0.24

If the user's iPhone is awake and an AirTag that has been separated from its owner is close and generating a sound to indicate it has been relocated, a new notification will inform the user. The object can then be located using sound or Precision Finding, if available. Apple claims that this modification will also be beneficial if the AirTag sound is difficult to hear or if the speaker has been tampered with.

2.0.36

Apple also claims that the current firmware version, 2.0.36, resolves an issue with the AirTag accelerometer not activating in some circumstances. All of the aforementioned functions require iOS 16.2 or higher, while the Precision Finding features require an iPhone 11 or later with a U1 Ultra Wideband processor.
