Earlier this year, the WordPress Training Team drafted a work-in-progress guide on running a course cohort. A course cohort is defined as a group of people who go through a learning journey at the same time. Course cohorts can be run asynchronously, but include planned synchronous sessions for group-related activities. Course cohorts usually follow aspects of social learning, where the group can interact with each other, and learn from each other.

Today, we’re pleased to announce the first Learn WordPress course cohort!

What?

The topic of this cohort will be Developing your first WordPress BlockBlock Block is the abstract term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. The idea combines concepts of what in the past may have achieved with shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery into a single consistent API and user experience., and will be facilitated by @psykro. This course will be perfect for first-time WordPress block developers, who have never built a block before.

The structure of the course will be as follows:

Week 1: Introduction, preparing your environment for block development.
Week 2: Using create-block to scaffold your first block, Internationalisation.
Week 3: Block styling, block supports, block controls
Week 4: Block attributes, block components
Week 5: Interacting with WordPress data
Week 6: Dynamic blocks

When?

The course cohort will start the week of the 4th of September, 2023, and end the week of the 9th of October, 2023.

This will be a 6-week cohort and will include asynchronous as well as synchronous (real-time) sessions for cohort participants.

An hour-long synchronous session will take place every Wednesday at 8:00 UTC for the duration of the course cohort. It would be preferable to only apply if you are available at this time, every Wednesday from the 4th of September, 2023, to the 9th of October, 2023

How?

The course content will combine text, video, and some collaborative/whiteboard-type exercises. All content will be hosted on Learn WordPress and will be accessible by invite only. A SlackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/. group DM will be set up in the Make WordPress Slack for course attendees to be able to communicate with each other. To access the content, all applicants will need a valid WordPress.orgWordPress.org The community site where WordPress code is created and shared by the users. This is where you can download the source code for WordPress core, plugins and themes as well as the central location for community conversations and organization. https://wordpress.org/ profile, and a Make WordPress Slack account.

Who?

This first cohort will be limited to 14 attendees. To sign up for this course, please complete the signup using this link to the signup form.

Please make sure to include your WordPress.org profile URLURL A specific web address of a website or web page on the Internet, such as a website’s URL www.wordpress.org, and your Make WordPress Slack username. The signup form will remain open until the 20th of August 2023.

To ensure that all applications stand an equal chance to participate in the cohort, we will select the 14 participants randomly from the list of valid applications. To ensure that your application is valid, you must have a WordPress.org profile and Make Slack account, and be available every Wednesday at 8:00 UTC for the duration of the course.

The selection process will be handled by the course facilitator, @psykro, and overseen by Training Team repTeam Rep A Team Rep is a person who represents the Make WordPress team to the rest of the project, make sure issues are raised and addressed as needed, and coordinates cross-team efforts. @bsanevans.

We do understand if any unforeseen circumstances that occur during the course duration require you to miss one or two of the synchronous sessions. Still, it would be preferable if you could attend them all.

Any valid applications that are not selected for the first cohort, will be kept on a waiting list, and a future course cohort on the same topic will be hosted for those who were not selected for the first run.

Thanks to you all for your efforts. I love this direction. What are your plans for other time zones, for instance, daytime hours in the western hemisphere?

Will the lessons and meetings all be in written English?
Unfortunately I’m not very strong in spoken English 😀

  This first cohort that I am facilitating will be in English, but it is my hope that after this cohort is completed, and the process documented, other facilitators in other languages will be able to run the same cohort for their locales.
  
  I would also add that being strong in spoken English is not a requirement to apply, as long as you are able to work with written English.

Thank you to everyone who applied. We had a total of 64 applications, of which 14 will be selected for the first cohort, and the rest will be kept on a waiting list for future cohorts on the same topic.

We will be in touch with successful applicants next week and will follow up to confirm with those on the waiting list.
