Openverse Monthly Priorities Meeting 2023-09-06

Summary

In-progress projects:

Frontend sensitive content blurring: This is nearing completion, with one more major issue to tackle before we can flip the feature switch in production. We’ll move it into “Shipped” once the switch is on, but we’ll need to wait a few weeks to assess behavior before we can remove the flag entirely and move the project to “Success”.
Popularity calculations optimizations: The deadline for the milestone was pushed back to September 15th, though we hope to have it completed before then. Similarly, we will move it into “Shipped” at first; we can move it into “Success” once we have the successful completion of several data and popularity refreshes.
ECS alarms for anomalous behavior: Work is currently underway on this. Success criteria may be difficult to determine (since by default, new alarms are added as “unstable” until we feel confident in them). That said, this will be straightforward to move to “Shipped” once all the alarms and initial runbooks are created.
Django ASGI: We’ve encountered some dependency issues here but the work is clearly outlined. Once this is completed, we should be able to re-combine the APIAPI An API or Application Programming Interface is a software intermediary that allows programs to interact with each other and share data in limited, clearly defined ways. & thumbnail services into a single service.
Additional search views: Recent work on improving the image/audio grids can be considered part of this effort, much of the in-progress work is on the API end. We’ve transferred project lead from @fcoveram to @olgabulat while the former is away on extended AFK.
(Moved from on-hold) Sensitive content reporting flow guidelines: The maintainer team has outstanding questions which need to be answered about the actual moderation system to implement depending on the request of the sponsored moderators associated with this work. While we get answers to those questions, there is existing work which can be done in the form of copy changes and two implementation plans (cache management and computer vision metadata).

On-hold projects:

Search relevancy sandbox: This will remain on hold until the popularity calculation optimizations project is completed. The implementation plans are complete, so this will be almost entirely implementation focused. The work will be a good contrast to the implementation plan drafting necessary for other in-progress projects.
Clearly document all media properties and Nuxt 3 migration: These will be next-in-line for work after the above projects are shipped, after the search relevancy sandbox work.

New projects added:

Frontend logging: We will likely be adding a project involving improving frontend logging to the “Not Started” section. We’ll prioritize work on this when the opportunity presents itself in the future.
