A. Pending Notes

A reminder to those who have notes pending to please finish them up as soon as possible and let @lmurillom or @meher know in the main #marketing channel when they’re done. 

We are updating the P2P2 P2 or O2 is the term people use to refer to the Make WordPress blog. It can be found at https://make.wordpress.org/. with notes that have had links that need updating or ones that need copying over from the google doc, including some older items left in the google doc due to Covid-issues. Thanks to everyone for stepping in to help with this.

4. Team RepTeam Rep A Team Rep is a person who represents the Make WordPress team to the rest of the project, make sure issues are raised and addressed as needed, and coordinates cross-team efforts. Elections

  • We are continuing our call for team reps for 2022 for the Marketing team. 
  • Thanks to everyone who contributed, edited, made suggestions, and asked questions relating to our follow-up post.
  • Josepha and Chloe confirmed the election cycle for all teams will be yearly, and that existing team reps across teams stand afresh if they would like to, for the role. 
  • As we have some fairly newly appointed team reps in marketing, following previous requests for nominating people in the team, we would like to thank them too for their energy and hope they will consider standing.
  • A list of answers to questions regarding Team Rep Elections can be found in this Slack thread by @webcommsat.

If you would like to stand or nominate someone in the team who you feel would be a good team rep, you can do so in comments on the post or speak to one of the existing team reps. We have also been holding drop-in sessions if anyone has any questions.

  • For awareness rather than a request for anything, planning for WordCamp Europe 2022 is underway
  • With 5.9 delayed, that means that our next big event is State of the Word on 14 December 2021. There will be some organic and paid content going out on the WordPress profiles for Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. If you spot any of it, please like, share, comment, etc.
  • State of the WordState of the Word This is the annual report given by Matt Mullenweg, founder of WordPress at WordCamp US. B. CoreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress.

  • The About page/ help page bug scrub/ check-in has also changed from Mondays 19:00 UTC to 20:30. The full bug scrub schedule.
  • The revised schedule for 5.9. Please do read this. We will be continuing to work on items for 5.9.
  • With 5.9 delayed, that means that our next big event is State of the Word on 14 December. It’d be great to do the usual social amplification: sharing the post on your personal social profiles, sharing on the Make Marketing profiles, etc. There will be some organic and paid content going out on the WordPress profiles for Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. If you spot any of it, please like, share, comment, etc.

Help promote WordPress Meetups each week

Did you know contributors in the Marketing team pull together highlights and stories from online WordPress Meetups every week to help keep the community connected and support organizers?

You can discover what is on each week by following social media channels, and take part in promoting these amazing events held across the world. If you have social media experience and can help with the tasks in this area, join or leave a note asynchronously in the Marketing team meetings and we will help you get started. Tasks include:

  • research on the internet
  • checking links and current social media tags for the meetups and prospective audiences
  • maintaining the admin and tools behind this task area, and continuing to make it simpler and easier
  • checking time conversions (we also list events which are for a wider audience in UTC time so others can join in)
  • marketing/ communications support to organizers and responding to requests, working alongside the Community team
  • short stories and identification of potential ‘Contributor Story’ follow-ups too. We had been working on a series on organizers of WordPress Meetups which could possible run on social and newsletters to help encourage others, especially during pandemic. We have multiple ways you can get involved, so do come and chat to me (@webcommsat – @ abhanonstopnewsuk on SlackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/.), @lmurillom, @yvettesonneveld, and @meher who have been co-ordinating this area. We can also pair you up with an existing contributor, where possible, to get started.

You can join the rota on specific tasks for a couple of months or become part of the main group collaborating on this We have a small task group that work on this area every week and prepare items in advance.

During the last two years, we’ve also enjoyed contribution in this area from many contributors, ranging from those who wanted to learn more about a specific aspect to help their own local WordPress Meetups, to those who had specialist skills and were able to share them directly.

Social media examples

We write social media in such a way that the Meetups themselves can use them and people can reshare the posts or the meetup that is of interest to them with their own networks. With more people taking part, we can do more on this. We have reduced some of the outputs in this area due to the effect of the pandemic and as some of our regular contributors have had more limited time. If you would like to join the team on this, do let us know.

WPDiversity events of interest to Meetup organizers

We work alongside the Community team’s WPDiversity group, and have a handful of members that contribute in both areas. Many of the events run by the group can benefit Meetup organizers and aim to encourage and support both them and potential speakers. The group runs workshops for underrepresented community members and for WordPress event organizers to increase diversity in the project.

You can help promote these events by resharing our social media posts and using our special web links for the event bookings. If you would like to help in drafting the posts, come to one of our weekly meetings on Wednesdays (currently 14:00 UTC) on the #marketing channel on the Make WordPress Slack Instance.

As we get details on the finalized events, they are added to the Rolling Tasks board on the Marketing GitHub. We have moved to a quarterly google doc for working on social media posts as some events series span two months.

We also promote links in the weekly Marketing team agenda and share them and the event link for promotions with the WPDiversity team.

Learn WordPress promotions

We are collaborating with the Training team on workshops, meetup events and more to highlight and introduce all the amazing content on and are coming to this free Learn WordPress resource.

Recap of the tools we use and collaborate on with Learn WordPress

In the longer term, we will bring together meetup promotions tasks and Learn WordPress events onto the single Rolling Tasks card on the Marketing Team’s GitHubGitHub GitHub is a website that offers online implementation of git repositories that can easily be shared, copied and modified by other developers. Public repositories are free to host, private repositories require a paid subscription. GitHub introduced the concept of the ‘pull request’ where code changes done in branches by contributors can be reviewed and discussed before being merged be the repository owner. https://github.com/. But for now, as team members are learning about GitHub and the ways of logging Learn WordPress items ready for promotion and the lead-in times for marketing queries / drafting are being finalized, we are running three separate tasks boards. This also helps us with discussions on graphics and be in sync with other plans in the Training team.

We also are aware that some of our members have difficulty or access issues using Google Sheets. We are continuing to signpost and help with this, if you can join in, let us know.

Once the Marketing GitHub moves into the main WordPress directory, it may be that we keep the Learn WordPress marcomms board on its own to be able to potentially automate or cross-use from the main LearnWordPress GitHub repository. For background for those new to the tools being used, the Training team also use TrelloTrello Project management system using the concepts of boards and cards to organize tasks in a sane way. This is what the make.wordpress.com/marketing team uses for example: https://trello.com/b/8UGHVBu8/wp-marketing. and spreadsheet trackers, and there are discussions on other tools.

Tasks: Reaching extenders: test PHPPHP PHP (recursive acronym for PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor) is a widely-used open source general-purpose scripting language that is especially suited for web development and can be embedded into HTML. http://php.net/manual/en/intro-whatis.php. changes. Thanks to @vimes1984 @webcommsat and @marybaum for preparing this collaboration. We will be discussing how to best help extenders make their test suites compatible with the modernization of the WordPress Core PHP Test Suites and drafting potential communications/ social copy.

  • a “unit test” is what developers use to test there codes in an automated way
  • an “extender” broadly speaking refers to people who extend WordPress functionality by developing plugins / themes
  • to collaborate you need to go to the doc and remove “DELETE THIS TEXT AND FILL IN THIS CELL WITH YOUR IDEA” then put in how you would encourage an extender to unit test OR adopt news standards

  • The Marketing and Training teams had a great session at the Yoast Contributor Day focused on Learn WordPress. 
  • Contributors assisted in preparing social media posts regarding the content on Learn WordPress, and had a great discussion on the support for SEO planning around the content on Learn WordPress.

Tasks: 

  1. Proposal for ensuring high quality video contributions to LearnWP. We began work on this task last week and have had some valuable feedback regarding tips to improve your video recording, minimum standard of video quality, and more. The discussion continued in the meeting and rest of the week in the same document. [Update post-meeting: volunteer opportunity – Training requested assistance to summarize this for the P2 blog. A new version of the Google document (without email addresses) will need to be created to link from the summary]
    Action: You can add new comments into the working document (link in this Slack thread) for ensuring high quality video contributions to LearnWP. 
  2. Marketing and Training Team collaboration on wording following the Learn WordPress Needs Assessment. 
    1. From the learner’s perspective, what on LearnWP could help people in achieving their personal learning goals? Think about how the UXUX UX is an acronym for User Experience - the way the user uses the UI. Think ‘what they are doing’ and less about how they do it. and functionality can assist in this.
    2. From the perspective of employers, hiring individuals and the wider WordPress Community. Consider the vision for site redesign provided by the audit company. Please add any further comments. Suggestions from previous weeks have been sent to the team.
    3. Action/ contribution opportunity: continue adding to the working document (link in this slack thread) on the Learn WordPress Needs Assessment.

We are moving tasks to this tool, and you can start following and taking part on GitHub. 

Thanks to everyone who came to the introduction to GitHub repositories and updates from the testing and pilots, the background to how we arrived at using GitHub, and our tools for our new contributors. Further sessions will be announced for October and November. [Post meeting: 27 October 2021 will be a training session for users completely new to WordPress, please set up a GitHub username to use on the platform in advance]

The form continues to be available for expressions of interest for future sessions and to help identify attendees’ familiarity with GitHub.

We have had lots of ideas on the document about cross-promoting the social media amplification pack for 5.8 and for future promotions. Thank you to everyone who submitted the items. Currently, the main places the social media amplification pack are promoted are:

  • A group of team reps and long term contributors had a meeting last week with Josepha, the members of her team working on WordPress.org marketing related tasks and projects.
  • The goal of this meeting was to take inventory of contributions that are currently or could potentially be carried out by members of our global team. In addition to inventorizing, the idea is to map contributions to so-called stages of volunteer engagement.
  • That way, we will be better equipped to match tasks with contributors, which will hopefully improve the contributor experience and contributor retention. Once the tasks are mapped to stages of engagement, a next step will be documenting procedures for as many of the recurring tasks as possible.
  • We are in the final stages of planning a follow-session to continue working on  this. If you would like to learn more about the stages of volunteer engagement, please check out this talk from Josepha

3a) Meeting Notes

A big thanks to everyone for coordinating and editing drafts from past meeting notes which will be up shortly in the P2P2 P2 or O2 is the term people use to refer to the Make WordPress blog. It can be found at https://make.wordpress.org/.. As a few people are on personal holidays and others are unwell due to Covid, we are a little behind on Notes and will post updates in the coming weeks.

Thank you to @yvettesonneveld for working on drafting last week’s notes.

A reminder to check the draft notes is circulated at the meeting every week. Please review and check your WordPress.org ID is listed on collaborations that you have actively contributed to. 

We rely on this to update the final notes and to put into our charts to show where we need extra contributors, and how we are having an input and impact onto the work assigned/requested from other teams.

3b) Notes group recruitment

  • If you would like to contribute by preparing notes for future meetings, please contact @lmurillom and/or @meher. 
  • Initial draft deadline: Friday 17:00 UTC each week to help with actions and follow-ups that might be needed.

3c) GitHubGitHub GitHub is a website that offers online implementation of git repositories that can easily be shared, copied and modified by other developers. Public repositories are free to host, private repositories require a paid subscription. GitHub introduced the concept of the ‘pull request’ where code changes done in branches by contributors can be reviewed and discussed before being merged be the repository owner. https://github.com/ 

  • We are moving tasks to this tool, and you can start following them there. 
  • @vimes1984 and @webcommsat will be doing a demo showing what we have been building with your feedback, and the issues it is hoped to help solve. This live demo will be in September 2021.

A meetup is typically a chance for local WordPress users to get together and share new ideas and seek help from one another. Searching for ‘WordPress’ on meetup.com will help you find options in your area. tomorrow, which will cover topics like Developing for the BlockBlock Block is the abstract term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. The idea combines concepts of what in the past may have achieved with shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery into a single consistent API and user experience. Editor and Full Site Editing.   • The “WordPress Translation Day 2021” event is between September 1-30. 
  • We are looking for local teams, Meetup groups, or any translation contributors to host mini-events during the month of September 2021. Read this post for more details.

4d) Test Team

  • Call for volunteers: The Test Team is reviewing the testing instructions scattered across the Make blogs (and TracTrac Trac is the place where contributors create issues for bugs or feature requests much like GitHub.https://core.trac.wordpress.org/., GitHub etc) to make sure that the instructions are correct, up-to-date, etc  
  • Anyone can start at any time to add links into the audit spreadsheet (referenced in the post). Team reps will be updated every few weeks about the progress

4e) Training Team

  1. Feedback requested on Learner Achievements on Profiles. This would show course completions on your .org profile in a new tab. Request for marketing to raise awareness of feedback wanted on this post.
  2. There will host at least one subtitling working session for content on LearnWP in the last half of September in conjunction with WPTranslatorDay. Date soon to be announced.
  3. We anticipate having an Introduction to WordPress course ready to promote near the end of September 2021 @arasae

  • As mentioned in this slack thread, the Coffee Break from September 2021 will be twice a month. A lot of people are finding the current time too late or early for them. A Google Form has been created to help find a time to work for most people. Please fill in your preference timeslot in this form. Link to the form can be found in this slack thread. Form will be open 1 September 2021. There is also an informal coffee break drop-in after the main weekly meeting.
