As part of the Community Team, we’ve crafted an agenda that’s not just about ticking boxes – it’s about inspiring innovation, fostering meaningful connections, and driving the future of WordPress events. This year, our focus is on expanding our reach, enhancing our support systems, and tackling the challenges that come with a growing community.

What to Expect at Community Tables

Morning Sessions: 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM

During the morning sessions, we will focus on fostering meaningful discussions and setting the tone for the rest of the day. The agenda includes:

We’ll kick off the day with warm welcomes and introductions to create a friendly and inclusive atmosphere. Get to know Community Team fellows and local organizers, and make meaningful connections.

New Purpose, Challenges and Opportunities for the Future of WordPress Events
We will discuss the new purpose of WordPress events, current challenges of the events program, and our strategies to increase the user base of WordPress through events.

Be part of our conversation about the role and benefits of mentorship within the Community Team. We will:

  • Learn about other Make/Team’s mentorship practices (e.g., Training Team Guide Program).
  • Find actionable next steps for providing mentorship benefits to contributors.

Experienced Contributors: Your insights and experiences are crucial for identifying potential challenges and solutions.

New Contributors: Share your fresh perspectives on your onboarding experience to help us improve our space for future members.

    • Round table: Improving the Global Sponsorship program for organizers, community, and sponsors (Facilitated by @peiraisotta, @awarner20 and @tacoverdo)

      Companies Help Drive the Community with Their Sponsorship. We will discuss how to improve the sponsorship program for all parties involved: sponsors, organizers, and attendees.

WCEU 2024 Contributor Day: What to do?

WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. Europe 2024 is one month ahead and the Community Team would love to have as many contributors joining as possible. WCEUWCEU WordCamp Europe. The European flagship WordCamp event. is one of the flagship events held in a year along with WordCamp Asia and WordCamp US. During this time, we would love to welcome team members to get together, contribute, collaborate, onboard new members, and maybe come up with new ideas for the future. Several members including some of the Community Team Reps will be present at the event and we will have few facilitators to get through the day.

WCEU 2023 Community Table Recap

The community team created multiple sub-tables to discuss and work on several topics in a focused manner.

Here is a brief summary of the day’s discussions.

Contributor Working Group – Mentorship

We had 12 contributors who discussed the contributor mentorship program in detail. Shared ideas, and identified the next steps for the program. The mentorship program pilot dates have also been identified – our first cohort starts on July 12th! 

Improving Sponsorship Proposals

Subgroup lead: Taco Verdonschot ( @tacoverdo )

Discussion on how we can better describe the benefits sponsors are getting to create clarity for both sponsors and organizers. You can find the working doc in Google Docs. This will be added to/merged with the Handbook later.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in WordPress

Subgroup lead: Junko Nukaga ( @nukaga ) , Shusei Toda( @st810amaze )

We discussed what we perceive as challenges and actions we can take to promote diversity in our community. For example, how organizers can actively reach out to increase speaker applications from women, support from corporations, and sharing and encouraging active contributors to share their experiences. Also, promotion of Diversity Speaker training. 

Discussion about Next Generation WordCamp

Subgroup lead: Angela Jin ( @angelasjin )

Sixteen (16) people participated in the discussion. We discussed what Next Gen WordCamps are and how they came to be, the new challenges they bring and how we can address those, and also how they can be of excitement and benefit to the whole community. We explored new event formats and topics, and how sponsorship and contribution might work. People were invited to suggest new ideas for events, and to help the Community team improve its events tooling.

We audited the Community Team Handbooks for clarity, typos, and other improvements. We fixed a broken link in the Virtual Events handbook.

We worked on migrating our old TrelloTrello Project management system using the concepts of boards and cards to organize tasks in a sane way. This is what the make.wordpress.com/marketing team uses for example: https://trello.com/b/8UGHVBu8/wp-marketing. goals boards from 2021 and 2022 into our new GitHubGitHub GitHub is a website that offers online implementation of git repositories that can easily be shared, copied and modified by other developers. Public repositories are free to host, private repositories require a paid subscription. GitHub introduced the concept of the ‘pull request’ where code changes done in branches by contributors can be reviewed and discussed before being merged be the repository owner. https://github.com/ repo. Shout out to Benjamin for spearheading that even though they’re a new contributor to our team!

About the Community Table at this WCEUWCEU WordCamp Europe. The European flagship WordCamp event. Contributor Day

Since there were many topics that the community team wanted to address, we asked each sub-table to have a lead who would be in charge of facilitating the work, and each sub-table was asked to facilitate their own work.

We set aside about a month for preparation, soliciting the topics and work to address, recruiting leads, and announcing the sub-tables, in order.

Feature idea: Speaker profile block

I propose we build a WordPress profile bio blockBlock Block is the abstract term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. The idea combines concepts of what in the past may have achieved with shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery into a single consistent API and user experience., that, given a WordPress username, pulls the name, image and the bio from that users profile.wordpress page and displays it, and links back to the profile page. This could then be used by WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. organizers instead of creating a speaker page for every speaker, which is inevitably going to be out of date, creates a lot of work etc.

Doing this dramatically reduces the number of pages on individual WordCamp sites, thus making it less work for the organizing team and reducing duplicate content between WordCamp sites.

The WordPress profile page of course should link back to the WordCamp page, preferably with a filterFilter Filters are one of the two types of Hooks https://codex.wordpress.org/Plugin_API/Hooks. They provide a way for functions to modify data of other functions. They are the counterpart to Actions. Unlike Actions, filters are meant to work in an isolated manner, and should never have side effects such as affecting global variables and output. on the profile page showing future and previous speaking engagement for the user. This in turn improves interlinking of WordPress.orgWordPress.org The community site where WordPress code is created and shared by the users. This is where you can download the source code for WordPress core, plugins and themes as well as the central location for community conversations and organization. https://wordpress.org/ and WordCamp.org. In a later stage, we would ideally also tie this to WordPress.tv.

WordCamp Europe 2022 Contributor Day: Plans for the Community Team Table

WordCamp Europe 2022 kicks off in exactly two weeks, and the Community Team will make its (strong) presence felt at the contributor day on June 2! 💪 WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. Europe, WordCamp US, and WordCamp Asia are what we consider flagship events and are always a great opportunity for teams to get together, contribute, and onboard more people. Several members of our community will be present, and it will be a great time to make the most out of our time to work on our team’s goals for 2022, together, in-person.

Over the past few weeks, Community Team members discussed several interesting ideas for the contributor day; it was in fact an agenda item at the Community Team chat for May 2022. As a result of these discussions, our team has decided on some exciting ideas. I am excited to share the WCEU 2022 Contributor Day plans for our team!

Tasks for experienced contributors

  • Hold an in-person DeputyProgram Supporter Community Program Supporters (formerly Deputies) are a team of people worldwide who review WordCamp and Meetup applications, interview lead organizers, and keep things moving at WordCamp Central.   • Organize an in-person Training session for MentorsEvent Supporter Event Supporter (formerly Mentor) is someone who has already organised a WordCamp and has time to meet with their assigned mentee every 2 weeks, they talk over where they should be in their timeline, help them to identify their issues, and also identify solutions for their issues., covering things like good practices, how to check-in, resources, etc. See:

  • Participate in a discussion on the tools we need to properly organize and market WordCamps.
  • Join a discussion on outreach strategies that will help reactivate inactive Meetup Organizers, involving experienced organizers as much as possible.
  • Be a part of brainstorming sessions/discussions to share experiences/good tips for Meetup/WordCamp organizers
  • Members of the #WPDiversity team are planning a roundtable – join them. You can also help out the team with translating their documentation into local languages.
  • Review and update our Handbooks, and help translate them to local languages.

The sixth call for testing as part of the Full Site Editing (FSE) outreach program is out! Call for ideas: WordCamp Europe 2021 Community Team content

WordCamp Europe Online 2021 is coming soon! The event takes place 7-9 June and all Make teams have the opportunity to host some content during the event if we’d like to.

Workshops
We can apply to host a workshop or two in one of the main tracks during the event. There’s no automatically guaranteed spot in the schedule for us, all workshop applications are vetted by the content team but given a slightly higher priority.

The workshop(s) can be almost anything our team would like to host, the only restraint is that the topic needs to be related somehow to the things our team does. Unformal networking sessions
Another way how we can be part of the WCEUWCEU WordCamp Europe. The European flagship WordCamp event. program is by hosting one or two unformal video chat sessions (in Zoom or a similar platform provided by WCEU). These will be during the main event days and can be almost anything we would like to do. For example, hosting a live Community office hoursOffice Hours Defined times when the Global Community Team are in the #community-events Slack channel. If there is anything you would like to discuss – you do not need to inform them in advance.You are very welcome to drop into any of the Community Team Slack channels at any time. to answer all questions related to WordPress events or discussion about do_action events.

WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. WordCamp Europe 2019 – Recap of Community Team Activities At Contributor Day + Plans for the Future

Europe 2019 in Berlin was great, thanks to all the people that joined us from all over the world to make WordPress!

Here is what the team worked on:

Moving Forward with Our Efforts

Contributor Days are productive because of the face to face interaction and the urgency: we want to get things done during the day 😉

How do we keep the momentum going? Folks, I am repeating myself here… but project management is the answer!

We have a Trello board and we don’t really use it. I suggest we discuss it, again, during our next team chat, July 4th.

Hopefully we can find a common procedure that I believe will make us more efficient.
