The Orientation Checklist

Get to know them, and find out more about their interest and availability.

  • How did they find out about becoming a supporter?
  • Why do they want to be a supporter?
  • How much time can they work on Community team work per week?
  • Are they sponsored or not?
  • What are their biggest motivations?
  • What do they prefer to do and learn?

Remind them of the qualifications.

Based on the recent chats, we are looking for those who can do the following.

  • have the willingness to play a bigger role within the community
  • able to commit consistent time to supporting Community team events
  • trusted
  • have experience organizing WP Community Team events
  • involved in any WP.org projects
  • enjoy sharing resources and helping others grow
  • are interested in guiding the community

Remind them of the time commitment for Event Supporters: 3-4 hours a month

The Confidentiality Agreement 

Highlight that supporters can’t share any conversation or information they see as part of being a supporter — HelpScout, meetupMeetup Meetup groups are locally-organized groups that get together for face-to-face events on a regular basis (commonly once a month). They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/. channel, etc. — with anyone as that would violate the confidentiality agreement, unless they have permissions from those who were part of the conversation.

Mentoring event organizers is a task with qualifications.

  • Must have taken the Community Team Event MentorEvent Supporter Event Supporter (formerly Mentor) is someone who has already organised a WordCamp and has time to meet with their assigned mentee every 2 weeks, they talk over where they should be in their timeline, help them to identify their issues, and also identify solutions for their issues. Training to take.
  • Any supporter with experience can mentor meetupsMeetup Meetup groups are locally-organized groups that get together for face-to-face events on a regular basis (commonly once a month). Learn more about Meetups in our Meetup Organizer Handbook. and other events
  • WordCamps can currently only be mentored by someone who has been the lead organizer of a WordCamp from application to the successful close of the camp in the last 5 years.

Discuss how to get help.

  • We all need help from time to time. 
  • The Community Team encourages questions.
  • We run into many unique challenges and cultural situations that require discussion, and are excited to learn alongside you.
  • There are four primary ways that you can get help.
    • Slack Channel
    • Handbooks
    • Email support@wordcamp.org
    • Private Conversations
  • Share the Getting Help handbook page with more information.

Explain the tools they’ll use.

  • Introduce the supporter to our main tasks and tools
    • Community Supporters and Managers handbook
    • Meetup Tracker

Go over our application review process.

  • Assign them one or two meetups to review, and schedule a date to follow up.

As you wrap up, restate how important it is to respect this confidentiality agreement.

Finally, share the next steps with them.

  • Ask if they’re comfortable with the expectations described.
  • You’ll send a contributor agreement via HelloSign.
  • Once signed, we will invite you to the necessary Slack channels and provide you with the resources you need to get started.
