Ko-fi is a crowdfunding platform meant to give monetary support to content creators, act as a stronger positive feedback than a like and serve as a way to thank others in a more fulfilling way.
Ko-fi doesn't process any payments by itself, instead uses services like PayPal and Stripe (company). Also, doesn't charges any commission on transactions made from the site,
History
Ko-fi.com Domain name was registered on May 15, 2011[1] and announced it live on twitter two days later[2]. The website currently states:
Nigel Pickles (Ko-fi's founder) wanted to thank a creator who had helped with a project. All he could do was "Like" the content. It felt impersonal. "If only I could buy them a coffee as a thanks". The idea for Ko-fi was born.[4]
It started as a simple button link generator, where users put a name and a PayPal email address, and donors on usage could put their name and a message. This names and message was then posted on Twitter as a promotional way.
As of July 26, 2019, Ko-fi claims they have raised $15 million in it's 8 years of service.[5]
