The Embassy of the United States in Islamabad is the diplomatic mission of the United States in Pakistan. Ambassador Cameron Munter is currently the Chief of Mission, as of October 6, 2010.[1] The embassy was burned to the ground in 1979 by Muslim extremists. The embassy building is occupied by the United States Ambassador to Pakistan.

The U.S. Department of State also maintains Consulates in Peshawar, Lahore and Karachi.[2]

History

The first U.S. embassy in Pakistan was established on August 15, 1947 in Karachi, which at the time was capital of Pakistan. In 1958, the capital of Pakistan was moved to Rawalpindi and then in 1960, to Islamabad, where current premises of embassy situated.
