The Steel Sword is a one-handed weapon that appears in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
Design[]
The sword has a steel blade as to be expected, with some rugged designs on the bottom edges. The hilt appears to be made of a fine wood, with metal woven into it, while the base of the blade has complex line patterns, with some dark gray areas.
Locations[]
Unenchanted steel swords will begin to appear throughout Skyrim at level 2, and enchanted swords can be found at level 3. These locations include:
- Blacksmiths and general goods merchants.
- Wielded by various characters or enemies.
- Found as random loot in chests, or as a world item throughout Skyrim.
Fixed locations[]
- A steel sword can be found sticking out of a pile of rocks at Rebel's Cairn.
- A steel sword can be found on Alvor's fireplace in Riverwood, but it must be stolen.
- A steel sword can be found on a dresser in Riverwood Trader, but it must be stolen.
Smithing[]
A steel sword requires the Steel Smithing perk to create. It can be forged at a blacksmith's forge with the following components:
- 1 x Leather Strip
- 2 x Steel Ingot
- 1 x Iron Ingot
It can be upgraded with a steel ingot at a grindstone, and also benefits from the Steel Smithing perk, which doubles the improvement.
Variants[]
- Skyforge Steel Sword – a possible reward for completing The Companions quest "Proving Honor."
- Queen Freydis's Sword – part of a miscellaneous quest given by Oengul War-Anvil in Windhelm. He requests the Dragonborn find this legendary weapon so that he may present it to Ulfric Stormcloak.
- Vilkas's Sword – a unique Skyforge Steel Sword.
Trivia[]
- Passing by a Hold Guard with a steel sword equipped may trigger the line, "Favor a Steel Sword do ya'? Good choice for slashing or stabbing."
- This sword appears as the weapon for the Dragonborn Mii Swordfighter costume in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.[1]
- This is the sword used by the Dragonborn in almost all advertisements, making this weapon the series poster-weapon.
- A similarly-named weapon of the same design, available via Creation Club content in Fallout 4, another Bethesda Softworks title, is based off of this one.
