#Electronics Turns Positive 🤩 Unit shipments of both #PCs and #smartphones versus a year ago have turned positive. According to IDC, #PC shipments in 1Q 2024 were up 1.5% from 1Q 2023, the first positive year-to-year change since 4Q 2021. #Smartphone year-to-year growth turned positive in 4Q 2023 at 8.5%. The growth continued in 1Q 2024 at 7.8%. 4Q 2023 was the first positive year-to-year smartphone change since 2Q 2021. Despite the positive trend in 1Q 2024, IDC projects modest year 2024 growth of 2.4% for PCs and 2.8% for smartphones. Electronics production for most key countries in #Asia is on an upward trend. #Taiwan electronics production was the strongest, with three-month-average versus a year ago (3/12) change in February 2024 at 19.7%, the strongest growth since November 2022. #China electronics returned to double-digit 3/12 increases in January at 11.6% after declines in early 2023. March 3/12 growth was 13.3%. #Vietnam electronics production 3/12 change increased 3.0% in March, the sixth consecutive positive month after eight months of declines. #Japan and #SouthKorea were the weakest countries. Japan had a 3/12 decline of 1.4% in January, the second consecutive monthly decline following 14 months of increases. South Korea electronics production 3/12 change decreased 4.2% in February after slightly positive growth in December 2023 and January 2024. It’s magic! How to identify your lost cat This week we had our German friends over from ELATEC GmbH, our long term supplier and leader in the market when we have it about RFID solutions. RFID readers for secure printing, access control for PCs or doors, payment systems for public transport, EV charging, a chip in the neck of your pet or in the ear of your cow. TOP-electronics and ELATEC Inc. are getting more close as a team looking at technology solutions, customization and territories. RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) works by using radio waves to identify objects without touching them. It involves two main parts: a "tag" with a small chip and antenna, and a "reader" that sends out radio waves. When the reader is near the tag, the tag picks up the signal and sends its information back to the reader. This is how the ID from the tag is know, it could be a pass for payments, to identity your lost cat. The tags also can have memory to write and read data for the application, for example the point for the loyalty system at the local shoe-store. RFID has multiple protocol options, ELATEC GmbH offers all of them. The distances could be from mm’s up to meters depending on the technology, 125KHz, 13.5MHz of higher. The antenna is integrated in the reader, and there are version to have the antenna externally. RFID is in your passport as well and is the access to everywhere ! #RFID

This picture was taken at the exhibition floor at embedded world Exhibition&Conference...in 2022. Last week in Nuremberg, I couldn’t see cars – or too automotive technology for that matter – in display. The different ecosystem players were still there: OEM (the car makers), Tier-1 (the companies that sell systems to the car makers), Tier-2 (the semiconductor companies that mostly sell to Tier-1s) and finally IP and other vendors that are part of the food chain. This at least was the “correct order of things” up until recently. But based on my many discussions last week, it seems the industry is in an active soul-searching: The traditional car makers bosses – mostly European - are looking west to Tesla and east to China, where cars are designed “top-down”: often starting with the SW in-mind, and then designing the core chips in-house, and buying some of the others. Similar to how mobile-phones are made. The European OEMs often feel that buying from the long-established supply chain of Tier-1s and Tier-2s leave them with undifferentiated cars, primarily in competition with the new players in the market. On the other hand, they have years of legacy and multiple models to support and look with envy on the newcomers that can start with a clean sheet of paper. That creates a stir that has the potential to disrupt the industry: OEMs thinking of building their own chips, semiconductor companies selling directly to OEMs, Tier-1 players trying to find their way in this puzzle. Amidst all that, Tesla – the “role model” – yesterday announced shedding 10% of its workforce (14,000 positions!), facing slowing demand and pressure on prices from Chinese competitors. Quite timely, The Economist this week reports that most EV wannabe-Teslas are also in trouble. On the other hand, Xiaomi introduced a few days ago a its first car, a Porsche-like all electrical SU7 model, that sells cheaper that Tesla’s Model-3 in China. It seems there is a exciting road ahead for the automotive industry, with many twists and turns!

Infineon Technologies is on schedule with the construction of the Smart Power Fab in Dresden and is initiating the final construction phase. During a visit, the Prime Minister of the Free State of Saxony, Michael Kretschmer, officially handed over the last outstanding building permit for the new fab issued by the State Directorate of Saxony. With a total investment of 5 billion euros, the company is making a significant contribution to the European Commission goal to increase the EU’s share of global #semiconductor production to 20 percent by 2030. The semiconductors manufactured in Dresden will secure future value chains in key European industries. The products manufactured in the new production facility will be used in the #automotive and #renewable energy industries. The interaction of #powersemiconductors and analog/mixed-signal components enables particularly energy-efficient and intelligent system solutions – hence the name Smart Power Fab.

I am proud that Infineon, again, is taking a stand and is actively supporting Munich Pride, also in 2024. Gartner research published interesting facts and figures about EV pricing and the EV sector in general: 👉 Battery-powered vehicles are projected to become cheaper on average than comparable combustion engine vehicles by 2027. Sensors are the key entry point for AI to interact with the physical environment. Best example are voice assistants. They can hear or feel that something is happening in their surrounding and react to it. So, no wonder that one of the primary reasons for the rapid acceleration of IoT is the continuous advancement in sensor technology for AI applications. At the same time, sensors are becoming smaller, more powerful, and more energy-efficient, enabling a broader range of devices to become “smart”. And: Exciting times ahead. The importance of the interplay between sensors and AI is gaining momentum. The advancements of Generative AI beyond Large Language models will further unleash the power of sensors. Further advancements in generative AI and foundation models will boost the capabilities to interpret sensors signals for contextual awareness. European semiconductor regions want to further expand cooperation. That was discussed and aligned at the first annual meeting of the European Semiconductor Regions Alliance #ESRA in the Saxon capital Landeshauptstadt Dresden. Knowing Saxony's petty statehood (Kleinstaaterei, everything was invented, but not yet from everybody) while seeing the state of Saxony taking this initiative underlines that the problems in the 🇪🇺 semiconductor industry are understood and well addressed: ✅ A resilient 🇪🇺 semiconductor eco system must provide the whole value chain from raw materials up to testing, cutting and packaging of chips. ✅ At the moment no region facilitates the whole value chain. ✅ Sustainable investments need high utilization rates of all investment goods. This can only be reached by an interregional aligned investment strategy. ✅ The aligned investment strategy will act as a 🧲 for further chip products made in 🇪🇺 made for the 🌍. ✅ All regions will profit from the growing semiconductor business. ON Semiconductor's #integration of this patented technology into its industry-leading #CMOS sensors will significantly enhance the company's smart #sensing product portfolio and pave the way for further growth in key markets such as #industrial and #automotive. #CQDs use nanoparticles or crystals with unique #optical and #electronic properties that can be precisely tuned to absorb a wider range of wavelengths of light. This technology extends the system's visibility and detection range from standard CMOS sensor wavelengths to SWIR wavelengths. To date, the application of SWIR technology has been limited due to the high cost and #manufacturing complexity of the traditional indium gallium arsenide (InGAas) process. Through this acquisition, ON Semiconductor will combine silicon-based CMOS sensor and manufacturing expertise with CQD technology to deliver highly integrated SWIR sensors at lower cost and higher yields. This will lead to more compact and cost-effective imaging systems with a wider spectrum for a wide range of #commercial and #industrial applications. The ability of these advanced SWIR sensors to see through high-density materials, gases, fabrics and plastics is important in many industries, especially in industrial applications such as surveillance systems, #silicon inspection, machine vision imaging and food inspection. In the field of #autonomous vehicle imaging, a higher spectral range will produce better visibility, allowing for better vision in harsh conditions such as extreme darkness, dense fog, or winter glare. SWIR Vision Systems is now a wholly-owned subsidiary of ON Semiconductor, and its highly skilled team will be integrated into the company's Intelligent Sensing Business Group. The team will continue to operate out of North Carolina.
