Just Remember What do you remember about your journey through life? your formative years, high school, when you graduated, when you got your first job, started your first business, your first major vacation and so on. A lot of times we focus on what we are going through rather than on what we are going to. We tend to focus on the negative rather than the positive or the possibilities. There is a lot of great things happening within us, around us, in our relationships, in our workplace and in our world that needs celebrating. I was reflecting on how far I have come the other day and went through memory lane where I recollected the good, the bad and the ugly experiences of life. Life is a fascinating journey filled with different seasons. Some seasons are great while other season are not so great. What I know is that every season has a purpose in our lives when we look at things within the context of the bigger picture or the grand scheme of things. I don’t know what season you are in right now, but what I can say is to remember not to waste the season you are in. During seasons of disruption, we forget to focus on where we are going and rather focus on what we are going through. Too much focus on what we are going through distorts our vision, taints our focus, and sucks our energy. I suggest you spend this week remembering how far you have come, the amazing journey ahead, the sights and sounds as you continue the journey called life. I see/hear this so often across all industries. Individuals contributors are promoted to a leadership role because of the great job they are doing. To quote the title of one of Marshall Goldsmith's books - "What Got You Here Won't Get You There!" The skills that got the individual promoted are not the same skills required to be successful in their new role. Essential leadership skills include giving feedback, coaching and developing, holding others accountable, working with former peers and more. In my last post about the transformation of HR, I said we needed to change how we work by adopting a more agile, employee-centric approach. What I didn’t dig into, because I think it needs a separate discussion, is using technology to change how we work. Unfortunately, I don’t think this is a straightforward one. At least not yet. I say this because it doesn’t appear that we currently have a common understanding about what we want or need and how technology can solve the problems we have. 1 - In the conversations I’m seeing with HR folks, “AI” seemingly encompasses anything from automation to generative AI to simple data analysis to machine learning to ???. So, it’s unclear what HR folks collectively mean when we say we want to incorporate AI or that we need to better leverage technology to improve how we work. In some cases, it seems like what we want is simply automation and personalization, which doesn’t necessarily mean AI. 2- As I’ve said before, while AI tools are increasingly well-funded and everywhere, they often feel to me like a solution looking for a problem to solve instead of a solution custom built to solve the problem we have (particularly since the solution is so often not being designed by or in partnership with HR practitioners!). 3- On my initial post asking if HR had done enough to merit a rebrand, Viren Thakrar commented -> “Even when new tech gets implemented, it’s often retrofitted to an outdated process rather than taking an opportunity to redesign things in a more people-friendly way.”  This feels really true to me. What good is leveraging technology if that technology sits atop old ways of thinking and doing things? So, I think when it comes to AI and better leveraging technology for use in HR, we will get there and need to get there, but aren’t quite there yet. Yesterday, a discussion with a founder sparked insights into skills-based hiring. During the conversation, the founder asked a question about how to help hiring managers make the transition to more skills-based approach. I shared that I thought it was less about prepping the hiring managers and more that it is woven into the culture of the organization. You start with alignment around: Core competencies for success Career levels and pathways Professional development as a priority THEN, you can work those competencies, future career opportunities, and skills development into the hiring plan because you already have internal practices and language to support it.
