Growing climate change resilient coral up to 50x faster through a commercial model to restore dying reefs at scale

About us

Coral Vita grows resilient corals to restore our world's dying reefs. Coral reefs support up to one billion people, sustain 25% of marine life, and generate an estimated $2.7 trillion annually through tourism, fisheries, and coastal protection, but they are dying rapidly. Over 30% of our world's reefs have died over the past several decades, and we are projected to lose 90% of reefs by 2050. Fortunately, coral farming has been proven to work as a viable tool to revitalize reef health. Our ultimate vision is to create a global network of land-based farms that use coral farming to produce massive quantities of coral fragments. We sell the service of restoration to clients that depend on reefs' benefits, such as hotels, cruise lines, governments, reinsurance companies, and coastal property owners. By using these farms to grow corals up to 50x natural rates while enhancing their resiliency to climate change, we can improve the impact, scale and cost-effectiveness of reef restoration and help preserve coral reefs for future generations. We also develop and license tech to other restoration practitioners to improve data analysis, effectiveness, and impact.

It's a global team effort to preserve the ecosystems that sustain us all - from the countless restoration practitioners and scientists who've been building this space for decades to the frontline communities who rely on reefs the most to the private sector for financing keep coral healthy - and we sincerely appreciate Mike Bloomberg and Bloomberg Philanthropies for joining this mission and sharing Coral Vita's vision.

While we continue to act on climate destabilization and habitat destruction, we need new methods to keep reefs alive. Coral Vita, a winner of The Earthshot Prize and Bloomberg Ocean Initiative partner, has pioneered innovative ways to grow corals faster and make them stronger and more resilient to climate change. Coral restoration is essential for preserving reef health. Yet as a company that exists to scale restoration, we'll be the first to say that our job shouldn't exist. We urgently need our leaders in government, industry, finance, and the media to stop killing coral reefs by solving for the climate crisis, pollution, and habitat destruction. Losing these ecosystems is not just an ecological tragedy, but also is a socio-economic catastrophe. Coral reefs on their own generate $2.7 trillion annually through tourism, coastal protection, fisheries, and even medicinal value, while sustaining 25% of marine life and the livelihoods of up to one billion people worldwide. If you don't think their health doesn't affect you or that what's happening in this moment is part of some natural cycle, you're frankly incorrect. And they are rapidly dying right in front of our eyes.

In mid-July 2023, heat-stressed corals in the southern Florida Keys began bleaching—expelling their food-producing algal partners—amid the hottest water temperatures ever documented in the region during the satellite record (dating back to 1985). As weeks of heat stress have continued to accumulate, bleaching and death have become more widespread, raising fears of a mass mortality event on the region’s already fragile reefs.
