Basic Info[]

Wild

Even with all the other monstrosities around here, this fugitive from a Creature Double Feature deserves top billing. I mean, Dracula's right there in its species name! And Desmodus has a shriek that'll scare just about anything out of its way. It's also shrewd enough to limit itself to victims that it can carry off into the night. Although I'm not superstitious enough to advise stocking up on garlic and stakes before you decide to track down Desmodus for yourself, I'd still advise you to hunt these horrors out in the light and away from their caves – they seem uniquely adept at flying and hiding in those dark, narrow spaces.

Domesticated

Taming one of these beasties lets you add its eerie abilities to your arsenal. Use their unsettling scream to scatter your enemies. Command Desmodus to snatch up small prey for you. Let its uncanny power to vanish into darkness become your personal stealth mode. Desmodus has blood thinner in its saliva, which drains prey of more blood than this vampire could ever digest. If you can stomach the excess blood and drained meat your vampire pet leaves behind, you might be open-minded enough to appreciate another of its unholy gifts: a 'sanguine elixir' that helps enthrall the most stubborn beasts.

Behavior[]

Desmodus flocks in small numbers of around 4-6, and typically can be found hanging from the ceilings of the caves. When valid targets get within aggro range, the whole flock will swoop in for the kill. Small enough creatures, and players, will be picked up and will be drained of their Health until either the Desmodus or victim is dead. Like all cave dwellers, they ignore other wild creatures and will swarm together.

Appearance[]

Color Scheme and Regions[]

Bat regions:

This section displays the Desmodus's natural regions. For demonstration, the regions below are colored red over an albino Desmodus.

This information can be used to alter the Desmodus's regions by entering cheat SetTargetDinoColor <ColorRegion> <ColorID> in the cheat console. For instance, cheat SetTargetDinoColor 1 6 would color the Desmodus's "" magenta.

Drops[]

Base Stats and Growth[]

Combat[]

General[]

Desmodus will hang on the ceiling of certain caverns. It will attack survivors and tamed creatures up to medium size on sight. If the victim is small enough, Desmodus can carry it around.

Strategy[]

Ranged weapon can be used to deal damage pursuing Desmodus. Melee weapon is also required to free yourself from Desmodus' grapple.

Weaponry[]

Bring a shotgun/pump shot gun and net gun.

Dangers[]

Trying to tame a Desmodus without blood packs will drain your health quickly. Additionally, whilst taming a Desmodus in a tight enclosed area (like a cave), they can make you go through the mesh, and, if it kills you, can result in you losing all of your items.

Weakness[]

Stegosaurus Stegosaurus can prevent dismounting, effectively protecting the survivor on top of it. Alternately, the "tank" saddle on an Andrew will prevent them from grabbing you as well.

Taming[]

The Desmodus is tamed passively. When the Desmodus is aggro'd, it will grab a nearby tame or player (even off the backs of mounts) and carry them around while draining blood from them. Blood Packs should be used to mitigate the health drain, as they will preferentially take blood from the pack instead of whatever it's carrying. When the Desmodus has consumed 10 Blood Packs it will drop you.

Bring a shot gun, net gun, parachutes, and at least 200 - 400 blood packs. For 100% taming effectiveness, bring a high health tame (such as a moschops) with you.

Lure the Desmodus you wish to tame by shooting it from afar, this will alert all the ones nearby. Use your net gun to trap all of them and kill the ones you do not want to tame.

To quickly tame one, let the Desmodus carry you around. Having blood packs in your inventory will prevent the Desmodus from draining your health while carrying you.

For 100% taming effectiveness let the Desmodus carry the Moschops (with some blood packs in its inventory), this will raise the effectiveness. Once the effectiveness is at 100% percent, make sure you have blood packs in your inventory and allow yourself to be carried by the Desmodus to tame it.

Utility[]

Roles[]

  • Sanguine Elixir: Desmodus can craft "Sanguine Elixir" at the cost of 200 blood packs which will help tame even the hardest of creatures to tame. To use the Sanguine Elixir, equip it into your hotbar, and walk up to the unconscious creature you wish to tame. Simply "Use" the Elixir when looking at the creature. Once the creature consumes the Elixir, it will gain an immediate 30% to its tame percentage. (Make sure to have taming food in its inventory before using the Elixir!). To use the Elixir on a passively tamed creature, simply feed it as normal. Once it has been fed its taming food, simply use the Elixir like you would on an unconscious creature. Just like the traditional knockout tames, this will consume the Elixir, and give the creature an immediate 30% boost to its tame percentage. All creatures can only be fed a single Elixir. You can use the Elixer ONCE PER TAME and can also use it to add thirty percent imprinting. The Elixir can not be placed in the refrigerator and it's spoil timer does not go down while in the preserving bin.
  • Detector: Holding left click will use echolocation. Desmodus will ping enemies in a certain radius with a red circle. Victims will also takes additional 20% damage if affected during night. This ability is a bit finicky as sometimes creatures won't be pinged even when in line of sight.
  • Invisibility: Holding right click will turn it invisible, but only at night or when it is latched onto a surface such as a wall or ceiling.
  • Night Vision: Hold R to show the option to toggle it. Living creatures will be highlighted. Be careful when flying around deep water as it is hard to see the surface and you might get too close and fall off.
  • Blood Packs Harvester: Desmodus can harvest Blood Pack Blood Pack when attacking a creature, dead or alive. Desmodus gathers 1 blood pack for every 50 damage it deals. This is more efficient than subtracting blood from survivors themselves, making taming future Desmodus and Bloodstalker Bloodstalker easier. Keep in mind you can't attack while holding a torch or map or any other one handed utility. Hold R to show the option to toggle it.
  • Spoiled Meat Harvester: Harvesting corpses with Desmodus will give you spoiled meat, raw meat, and blood packs. Even for creatures that would normally give other resources, such as tek creatures, you will only get these three.
  • Creature Transport: Desmodus can grab small creatures on right click. Make sure that Life Drain is disabled before transporting any friendly tames as it will damage them.
  • Agile Fighter: You can fly in any direction, just like the Tapejara. It can also glide, however, this glide does not seem to provide any horizontal speed like the griffin and will instead only provide speed going downwards. Once leveling out to even flight, the extra speed from the dive is negligible to nonexistent.
  • Cave Mount/Realm Flyer: Desmodus is the only actually rideable flyer that can fly in caves/other realms on Fjordur. It can also attack while moving backward, improve its effectiveness against Onyc Onyc.
  • Airstrike: Desmodus allows rider weaponry, allowing the rider to fire their weapon mid-air. This can be used in taming and PVP airstrike.
  • Titan Slayer: 1 Desmodus can kill any titan and doesn't need a lot of skill for desert. Ice and Forest titans require very good flying skills though. While it's more recommended to fight Desert titan on Fjell due to the spawning glitch, the Ice and Forest are more recommended on Ext

When near a roof or wall, you can latch onto it by pressing the jump button

Notes/Trivia[]

  • For information pertaining specifically to the real-world Desmodus, see the relevant Wikipedia article.
  • Certain places on the Fjordur map gives the red night vision a foggy and dimmed effect, such as the western swamp island. Genesis bog biome also gives the effect
  • ARK's Demodus size is greatly exaggerated, real life Desmodus Draculae is really small, but it is still the largest species of Desmodus genus, having wingspan of 50 cm, though there's giant bat in real life, called Large Flying Fox, it is likely the largest bat in the world, but still smaller and a lot lighter than ARK's Desmodus.
  • People like to call it Morbius because of the vampire movie Morbius.
